About the Teacher---

¡BIENVENIDOS!
You have now opened the page about ME! “Soy la profesora de Español 2 y 3. Me
encanta esta profesión.” For those who have had an introduction to Spanish,
you will understand these sentences. Truly, I love the Spanish language and,
of course, teaching it, especially here at Wasatch Junior High.

MY CREDENTIALS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

I received my BA in Spanish, emphasis in Secondary Education, from BYU and
my MAed in Technology & Curriculum Design from the University of Phoenix.

Over the past 15 years, I have taught Spanish in high school and junior
high in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Utah (the best state in the Union!). In the
year 2000, after moving from Joplin, Missouri to Salt Lake City, I accepted
the position of Spanish teacher at Wasatch Junior High. Yeah! Teaching at
Wasatch has been a great experience and joy for me. I love working with our
great faculty, administration, and, of course, teaching the best students in
Utah.

MY PHILOSOPHY:

Every student has a right to learn in a safe environment. I respect my
students and expect them to respect me, my classroom, and each other. I
believe in immersing my students in the Spanish language. In the immersion
program, I practice a combination of methods introduced by Allan Pavio (Dual
Coding), James Asher (TPR), Blaine Ray (TPRS), and Steven Krashen
(Secondary Language Acquisition, the natural approach).

I encourage my students to converse in Spanish and be creative in using the
language. I feel students are successful when parents take an active part in
their education.

Thank you, parents for being a support to your student. Together, we can help
students succeed and have an enjoyable year here at Wasatch.

Speaking Spanish is a skill. Spanish needs to be heard, read, and spoken in
conversational settings. Hence, I have taken numerous opportunities to
expose myself to the language spoken by native speakers and attend
conferences and workshops whenever possible. This summer I had the
opportunity to attend three workshops in the area of TPRS and foreign
language proficiency. What a great experience!

My experience with the language and culture include living and working in
Chile (18 months), traveling to Peru in connection with a humanitarian
program, and working with families and individuals from various Latin
American countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Mission Statement: To infinity and beyond

The mission of Wasatch Junior High Spanish program is to provide each student
with a diverse language education in a safe and positive environment, to
promote self-discipline, self-motivation, and excellence in acquiring a
second language. As teachers at Wasatch Junior High, we join parents and
community to assist students in developing skills to become life long
learners, productive citizens, and be respectful to all groups of people in
our global community.
