Welcome to Math! Math is fun! Math is Power! Math makes you think in new ways. Organizational skills, logical thinking and being able to recognize patterns are all important aspects of mathematics. Therefore it will be my goal to help students develop these skills.
TOOLS FOR SUCCESS: Tools are required for every job, and learning math is no exception. The following tools will be needed for Geometry:
· Textbook (One will be sent home and one will be supplied in the classroom)
· Pencils
· Paper
· A graphing calculator (TI 83+ or 84 – I have some calculators the students can use in class)
Most class notes will be saved to my webpage. Access is through my website.
ASSIGNMENTS/CLASSWORK (30%)
Assignments will be given on a regular basis. Assignments may be turned in at the end of class, graded in class, or corrected in class the next day. ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN TO RECEIVE CREDIT. Assignments must be turned in the day they are due. Late work will be accepted until the unit test is given. (Students will be given 10 extra credit points at the beginning of each term – when an assignment is turned in late they will lose 1 pt for each late assignment.) Students are responsible for getting any missed work due to absences. Students get 1 day for each day absent to get in make-up work. A student may also correct the problems missed on an assignment and raise their score up until the day of the unit test.
Group Work: Cooperative group work will be used to help the students learn from each other and to share ideas. These activities will be based on material learned in class and social interactions.
Notebooks: Each student will be given a score sheet to record the grades of all work done in the class. This will be turned in at the end of each quarter. Students are expected to take notes of all lessons given in class. The notes will be of most use for studying for tests and quizzes. Students will be allowed to use these notes on tests. The notes will be collected with the tests for extra credit points. At the end of the quarter each student will turn in a notebook with the following: Score sheet (25 pts) and Quizzes & Tests (20 pts.) These must be turned in with a folder.
QUIZZES (25%)
Quizzes will be used to evaluate student preparedness and understanding of information presented in class. Additionally, we will be having quizzes to help prepare for the CRT test at the end of the year. They will be given on most Fridays and will be multiple-choice questions.
TESTS (45%)
At the end of each unit, a test will be given to evaluate understanding and ability to apply the material in the unit. Tests may be written, in the form of a project, or a group assignment. Student will be given opportunities in class to make test corrections.
(When a student misses a quiz or a test, they will have one week to make up the quiz/test.)
GRADING SCALE:
A student’s grade will be calculated by totaling the percentages from each category and then converting to a letter grade according to the following scale:
A = 93–100% A- = 89-92% B+= 84-88% B = 81-83% B- = 78-80%
C+ = 75-77% C = 70-74% C- = 68-69% D+ = 65-67% D = 61-64%
D- = 56-60% F = 0-55%
ACCOMMODATIONS: As appropriate, accommodations will be made to students as the need arises. Please see the teacher if any questions, concerns or situations present themselves.
CITIZENSHIP GRADE:
A student’s grade will be based on their activity in the classroom. Students who participate, complete their work, are respectful and willing to help other students and have less than 2 tardies and no unexcused absences can easily earn a ‘4’ in citizenship.
CLASS RULES:
1. Respect and kindness to all people in the class are expected. Each student’s attention should be directed at the material being presented. No student has the right to make fun of other students or keep them from learning.
2. Each student must come to class with materials and prepared to work.
3. Students must be in their seat when the tardy bell rings ready to work.
4. Participation in discussions and activities is mandatory.
5. NO large bags of backpacks will be allowed in the classroom. Students who come to class with a backpack (unless it is needed for medical reasons) will be sent to their locker to put it away and will receive a tardy. After the 3rd time they will be given an after school detention.
Cheating: Any student caught cheating may be given a failing grade for that assignment or test.
CALCULATOR LAB: This year I have been asked to pilot a calculator based learning program in my classes. I have been given a classroom set of TI-Inspire CX calculators to use in my teaching. The calculators will enable me to collect ongoing assessment of the how the students are learning as well as teach concepts through real-world applications using the calculators. I am really excited to get this opportunity to use technology in a way that will give students a deeper understanding of the math concepts taught in class.
Now a word of caution:
Each student will be assigned a calculator number to use while they are in class. These calculators will require that the students handle them carefully and not abuse them in any way. If a student chooses to abuse the calculator so that it is damaged in any way, they will be expected to pay to replace the calculator ($145) or for any required repair costs. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact me.
