SEÑOR MCBRIDE’S SPANISH 1
Introduction
Welcome to Spanish 1! This will be my 39th year teaching Spanish. I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Utah and my Masters Degree from Brigham Young University. I served a Spanish-speaking mission for the LDS Church. I am a graduate of the Granite District Mid Level Academy. I retired from the United States Army Reserve having served as First Sergeant and as an Investigations Officer with the Inspector General's Office accumulating 32 years of service. Your student will be introduced to some fundamental skills of Spanish vocabulary, grammar, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. Emphasis will be placed on your student’s ability to speak Spanish inside and outside of the classroom. EXTRA CREDIT POINTS will be available each term by doing Practice Exercises from the website www.nationalspanishexam.org. A special instruction sheet will be provided to students who would like to do extra credit. The extra credit points are awarded based upon documentation of the completion of each Practice Exercise. The EARLIER the completed extra credit is turned in, the MORE POINTS will be given for each exercise.

You can get there by going to 1) www.graniteschools.org, 2) click on SCHOOLS DIRECTORY, and 3) click on Wasatch Junior High. 4) click on the Wasatch Junior High WEB PAGE and then 5) click on FACULTY. 6) Click on MR. MCBRIDE and then 7) SPANISH 1. If your student is absent, he/she is allowed ONE DAY FOR EACH DAY OF ABSENCE to get assignments turned in for credit according to school policy. If a test is missed, I will allow your student FIVE SCHOOL DAYS to make up the test for credit. Test make up is after school in Room 211 Monday thru Friday. Please have your student consult the grade book program to see what assignments or tests are missing which are indicated by an (M).
The following is the grade scale for my class:
96-100% A 66-70% C 91-95% A- 61-65% C- 86-90% B+ 56-60% D+ 81-89% B 51-55% D 76-80% B- 46-50% D- 71-75% C+ Below 46% F
Often more points are awarded for both tests and assignments to reward excellent student performance. I want students to be convinced it is worth their effort to have an attitude of doing perfect work each time they hand their assignment or test into me. It is my custom to recognize excellent student performance, so I will frequently post their student number and score to reinforce excellent achievement. In order to allow students to receive instant feedback on their work, I will occasionally have students correct each other's work under my close supervision. If for some reason you object to that procedure, please notify me as soon as possible, so that I may accommodate your student. I will send home a permission slip for you to sign indicating your approval of this procedure.
Incentive Points and Extra Credit To earn incentive points your student must do the following: No name on board for breaking class rules earns 25 extra points. No tardies earns 15 extra points. No absences, excused or unexcused, earns 10 extra points. Limited EXTRA CREDIT will be offered each term from the www.nationalspanishexam.org website. Required Daily Materials Textbook Pen and/or Pencil Notebook with lined paper (Wide or College-ruled) No cell phones or other electronic devices in class No outside work allowed in my class
Discipline Plan and Class Rules First violation: Name on the board, lose 1000 pesos and 25 incentive points. Second violation: Check by name, lose 2000 more pesos and all incentive points. I use the school's special phone notification system to notify you of both bad and good behavior. This system, for the most part, is very specific in detailing the behavior. If your student scores the highest in the class on a test, I will let you know about that achievement. If he/she fails to hand in more than one assignment or project, I will attempt to inform you as quickly as I can.
The following are my class rules:
a. Listen to and follow directions. b. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. c. Be in class on time with assignment. d. Stay in your assigned seat. e. Raise hand to speak and listen to others. f. Bring required materials daily. g. Be honest, responsible, and caring.
Pesos Pesos are an incentive tool in my class to promote good behavior and participation. Pesos also help determine a more accurate citizenship grade for your student. They may be earned both in and out of the classroom. Examples: answering questions, volunteering for classroom activities, getting "A's" on tests, quizzes, or assignments, attending after school tutoring sessions, making vocabulary and verb flash cards, reading aloud at home, demonstrating extraordinary courtesy or good manners in class. Pesos are not transferable. A high average of pesos will merit a "4" citizenship grade. An average amount of pesos will merit a "3" citizenship grade. Students who have a low amount of pesos or owe pesos at the end of the term due to breaking class rules, tardiness, sluffing, or misbehavior will receive "2", "1", or "0” depending on the frequency and severity of the problem. The school policy for 3 tardies is to receive a "2", 4 tardies receive a "1", and 5 tardies or more receive a "0" in citizenship. I DO NOT PERMIT STUDENTS TO MAKEUP TARDIES.
Oral EvaluationsOral evaluations carry the most weight for a grade in my class (40%). Therefore it is essential in all of the units we study that your student can demonstrate his/her ability to use the Spanish language in a correct manner. Besides the correct pronunciation, your student must demonstrate that he/she knows the meaning of the vocabulary that is being evaluated. I encourage lots of oral practice at home and in the classroom. Please invite your student to discuss with you the things we have learned in class. To facilitate a more successful oral evaluation, your student has to be willing to speak the language when we practice in class. If your student misses any of the oral activities, he/she must practice at home. To enhance the input of vocabulary, I will show an occasional G-rated video in Spanish that requires students to extract vocabulary that they have studied or vocabulary similar to English (cognates) If for some reason, you object to your student viewing these videos, please email me. All videos are approved by the district and are shown according to district instruction policy. |
