Unit 2

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Learning to perceive in order to draw

2/27 – 3/20

In this unit, students will learn about the cognitive shift that artists make to see things as they really are, right now, in front of them instead of drawing the way most people draw - see something, name it, draw from memory pulling out a symbol that they've always used to represent that thing or drawing how they think that thing should look.  In this way students will strengthen their visual peceptive abilities.  They will develope patience, determination, orginization, decision making, and visual communication skills.

Unit 1

February 1 - 24

Composition: Principles and Elements of Art and Design

In this unit, students will learn the three aspects of a work of art, Subject Matter, Composition, and Content. They will learn the Elements of Art and how to use them to express content. They will learn the Principles of Design and how to use them to organize the elements into good composition. They will think critically and follow creative process to come up with their designs and then learn to critique those designs and learn from theirs and other’s works.

Homework

15 pts.

Students will find 7 works of art, each one a good example of one of the principles of design, one work of art for each of the 7 principles. They will not draw the work but rather cut and paste it into their sketchbook. They will then identify the principle and state what elements the artist used to follow that principle and how he/she used them.
