February Updates:
Last month our class learned so much about the ancient Egyptians, including
how they lived and adapted to their unique desert environment, as well as what
they contributed to our world as a society. The second grade also explored the
world’s habitats and biomes by creating models and conducting experiments.
This month we’re celebrating Chinese New Year and the 100th Day of School.
Please look for your child’s second quarter report card in the second week of
February.
This Month’s Learning Units:
We will examine how our habitats have affected the development of human and
animal communities.
Integrated Studies:
This month we’ll wrap up our study of the world’s habitats and biomes and
begin to learn about how animals are classified, how they adapt to their
environments, and what they consume. We will also finish our study of ancient
Egypt with a culminating project instead of a taking a test. Students will
develop an illustrated travel brochure advertising a trip to ancient Egypt.
All work for this project will be conducted at school.
Math:
We have just finished learning about time in Chapter 10. Did you know that
the ancient Egyptians developed the first 24 hour water clock, and 365 day
solar calendar? And did you know that the Chinese were the first to use paper
money? It’s true! That is why our next chapter in math will cover money. Get
out your change now, and begin to practice counting coins to $1.00.
Language Arts:
Our language arts will be fully integrated this month as the second graders
create their Egypt travel brochures and study Chinese fables. We will also
learn about contractions in grammar and character analysis in reading.
Islamic/Social Studies:
This month our school is celebrating the life and contributions of the Prophet
Muhammad (SAW). Help to reinforce your child’s appreciation of our beloved
Prophet by discussing 1 attribute of his amazing character per night.
