Unit Over view: Ancient Greece & Simple Machines
In this unit, we will focus on the community of Ancient Greece and its
contributions to the world. We will learn about simple machines, how the
environment of a place affects the humans and animals that live there and how
producers use resources to make products and about the scientific method. In
Language Arts we have already started another Writer’s Workshop (fiction
writing) and will learn about Greek myths and fables and about poetry. This
unit will last about 5 or 6 weeks.
Upcoming Projects/Events:
• Book Reports are due Jan 6.
• 2nd Quarter ends Jan 27.
Wish List/Volunteer Opportunities:
• I would like to have an inventory done of my classroom library; the
work would need to be done in the classroom.
• Please check the class website for the Wish List. JAK to those who
have already donated items.
School-Wide Announcements/Reminders:
• School-wide Fundraisers: Goodshop, Box Tops and CapriSun juice
pouches, Cell Phones and Printer Cartridges.
• We have school on Mon, Jan 16 (MLK day).
• Monday, January 30 is a teacher work day, no class.
• Help your child remember to bring a full water bottle every day (two
if needed).
• Please send in a bottle of hand sanitizer to take us through the end
of the year.
• Please come to the AFA Town Hall Meeting on Sunday, January 22 at 11
am
• Consider joining one of the AFA Board subcommittees on the topics
of: After School Programs, Summer Camp and Adult Learning (see details in
the AFA weekly bulletin). Meetings begin Sun, Jan 15.

Unit Overview: States & Country, Matter & Animals
In this unit, we are continuing our exploration of community as we focus on
the levels of state and country, inshaAllah. We will learn more about maps,
exploration of the Americas and how producers use resources to make
products. We will learn about states of matter and animal adaptations. We
will soon publish our Writer’s Workshop pieces and then will start Guided
Reading. We will apply what we are learning in our state and country
projects. In Math we will finish addition and subtraction, then move on to
time and money. This unit will last until sometime in December.
Upcoming Projects/Events:
• InshaAllah we will complete two projects during this unit: the state
project and the country project. Most of the work for both projects will be
done in class.
• The Hajj program is planned for Fri, Nov 4 and the Eid party for Nov
9.
• 1st Quarter ends on Nov 4. Report cards will be distributed at
Parent/Teacher conferences Nov. 14.
• Scholastic Book Orders are due Nov 9, JAK to those who have already
ordered. Go to the link http://clubs.scholastic.com/ and use the code H7D6B.
Ordering online is easy and all orders help our classroom get books and
materials.

School-Wide Announcements/Reminders:
• Student Council Elections: Congratulations to our 3rd grade Student
Council Class Representative Jamal and Alternate Salimah.
• Goodshop and Box Tops: Remember these are excellent ways for our
school to earn free money. Simply go through the Goodsearch page to do your
regular Internet shopping, such as at Amazon, Target and many other sites (be
sure to put Al Fatih as your charity). Look for Box Tops on regular products
you buy.
• Cell Phones and Printer Cartridges: The school gets point s for
these, all you have to do is drop your old/used cell phones and cartridges
off!
• Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Nov 14. If you need to
check your scheduled time, go to our class website.
