For
the first nine weeks grading period all
second
grade students will follow this outline for spelling homework:
Monday:
Write 5 sentences using as many spelling words as possible. Underline
each spelling word that you use. Please use a capital letter for the beginning
of each sentence and a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!)
at the end.
Tuesday:
“Rainbow Writing” – Using crayons, Crayola markers, or colored
pencils write all 12 of your spelling words in color. You may write
them any way you wish. Suggestions: write one entire word in red, write the
next word in orange, the next word in yellow, etc. Or you could write each
letter in the word a different color. You could write each consonant in a
different color and always do the vowels in blue. Be creative but you must be
neat!!!
Wednesday:
Alphabetical order: Using paper and pencil, write all 12 of your
spelling words in alphabetical order. Write your words in a column
going down the paper. Please write neatly. Remember if you have words
that begin with the same letter, you must alphabetize by the second or even
the third letter.
Thursday:
“Pretest at home”! Tonight your parent or guardian will be the
teacher! Use a sheet of notebook paper and a pencil. An adult will call your
spelling words to you just like the teacher will on Friday. After you have
written all of your words, the adult should “check” your paper. If you
misspell a word, you should practice that word…..perhaps write it 3 to 5 times
and have the adult call it to you again to write from memory. The adult needs
to sign the pretest. The pretest will be turned in to your reading teacher
on Friday morning.
Homework should be
written on notebook paper
You may write on the
back of the paper
NEAT WORK PLEASE!!
Each week 10 spelling words will be given
that fit a pattern. Your child will be responsible for knowing those 10 words
PLUS 5 additional words that fit the same pattern and 5 review words.
When students are able to apply the pattern to other words, it shows that they
have not just memorized their spelling words, but have learned the rule of the
pattern in order to spell other words.
110 Spelling Club
Every week, students have the opportunity
to be in the 110 Spelling Club.
Students who earn a perfect score on their
spelling test,
earn a sticker for the chart and a trip to
the candy jar.
After a student has earned 10 stars,
Ms. MacCabe treats them to free ice cream
on Friday!
Remember, your child will get their
spelling words from their READING teacher. If you have a question about
spelling, make sure to contact them.
