Questions? Answers!Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find my child's homework? Your child copies homework EACH day in his/her agenda. Please make sure to read and INITIAL their agenda each night. By doing this, I know you have seen their homework. This also can be used for a great communication tool! If you need to write me a short note, do so in their agenda and I'll be sure to see it the next day. (I check agendas every morning to make sure they have copied down the correct homework). What are my child's spelling words? Your child will be receiving 10 new spelling words each week from his/her reading teacher. They should be placed in your child's agenda (on the right hand side of where they copied down their homework). If for some reason your child is NOT brining home their words, or if they are absent- please call their reading teacher to get their words. Can I eat lunch at school with my child? Yes! You are welcome to join us for lunch ANY day! We eat from 11:53-12:23 in the cafeteria. When you arrive, there is a special table set up for parents to eat with the children. Target tests are CUMULATIVE tests given by subject at the end of each nine weeks. In 2nd grade, we start taking these tests at the end of the 2nd nine weeks. Your child will be responsible for knowing ALL the information that has been taught since the first day of school! The best way to help your child prepare for these tests is to review ALL study guides and old end of the unit tests, the week prior to testing. Your child's scores on these tests WILL be averaged in with their report card grades. Is their snack time in 2nd grade? Yes. I allow students to bring a snack and they are able to eat it during our recess time (at 2:30). When can my child buy ice cream? Ice cream is served every FRIDAY. The cost is $.75. I collect all ice cream money in the morning, and students select which ice cream they want. In 2nd grade we STRONGLY encourage ALL students to earn at least 50 A.R. points. Students are able to do this by taking tests on the computer from books they have read (either library or classroom). After each test is taken, a report is printed and signed by the teacher. Students should be taking at LEAST two tests a week. The goal for EVERY test is to get an 80%, 90%, or 100%. In my class- Students track their progress on a chart. For each test taken with a score of 80% or higher they get to place a sticker on the chart. If they receive a 100% on their test they also to get to visit the candy jar. As a grade level- for every 10 points a student earns, they get to "move their balloon" on the bulletin board display in the hallway. Pennies for ACE is an ONGOING fundraising for the ROAR program. Students may bring in any pennies they have, and at the end of each nine weeks- the school has a competition to see which grade level has collected the most pennies. When is the famous 2nd Grade Trip to Washington D.C.? Each year, on the first Thursday in May-the 2nd grade take a field trip to Washington D.C. to visit the Monuments and the National Zoo. We leave school promptly at 6:25am and arrive to Washington around 8:45am. We first stop off at the Monuments and Memorials. Students and chaperones have the opportunity to see the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The World War2 Memorial, The Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Reflecting Pool. After stopping by these sites, students get to enjoy lunch there. We then load back on the buses and head over to the Washington D.C. National Zoo for the rest of the afternoon. While at the zoo, students have the opportunity to study and take pictures of an animal of their choice that they will complete a written report on. We board buses at 3:50pm and head back to Amelia. We arrive back in Amelia by 6:30pm. Be prepared for a FUN and EVENTFUL day! Teachers' will take field trip money anytime from January-April. Please contact me if you need more information.
