Why does music matter?

Not only is music an incredible creative outlet but, Music helps 
children gain musical intelligence, vocabulary, an understanding
of symbols and sequence, and an increase in memory and auditory
function.

Music also enhances students academic growth in core subjects.
Want proof?
In a 2001 report of the profiles of SAT test takers, it was found
that students who studied music performance scored 57 points
higher on the verbal and 41 points higher on the math than did
students with no arts participation. Even more impressive,
students who studied music appreciation scored 63 points
higher on the SAT verbal and 44 points higher on the SAT math
than did students with no arts participation.

I play an instrument. How much should I practice?

Everyday! Quality practice is important for enjoyment and growth.

Your practice session should include:

P - play through a polished piece to start the session
R - read through assignments so you know what to accomplish
A - Assigned pieces: carefully play through assigned pieces
C - Correct and replay trouble spots
T - Technique work - scales, chords, specific drills
I - Invent and explore - make up your own songs or play by ear
C - Check off assignments and record practice time
E - Eat a snack or relax, you earned it!

How do I start voice, piano, instrument lessons for my Son/Daughter?

Local music stores offer a variety of lessons with experienced 
musicians.

Local colleges offer adult/child lessons by Professors and
students. Many times these are advertised on music bulletin
boards in the Music Dept.

Ask your music teacher! I have a list of people/places I
recommend if you are interested as well.
