Jones/Kass Team Newsletter

Dear Families,

It is with great sadness that we send this Monday newflash.  We are grieving the loss of one of our BMS staff members.  Mr. Cecil Brown was an instructional assistant who worked individually with some of our students on D pod.  Many of our students remember him as a part of their classrooms.

Mr. Brown passed away from extensive health issues.  We want to make sure families know that Mr. Brown did not have H1N1 and had not been in the school since mid-September.

Our guidance counselor will be addressing this with our students tomorrow afternoon.  We wanted to inform you of this today so that you might be available to your child when they come home tomorrow.  Ms. Heft will be available to talk with students individually to provide support; however, as your children come home, they may have questions for you or may want to talk about their concerns.  We want to make you aware so that you can assist your child and provide support for their concerns.

Please feel free to contact us or Ms. Heft if you have questions.  We will do all we can to support you and your child through this difficult time.

Hope everyone in your family is well - it seems like the sickness that had been spreading throughout our team has subsided.  Let's hope we continue to have good health.

Next week is the end of our second grading period.  One-third of this school year is just about behind us.  We continue to move steadily through the curriculum in each of our classes.

In Language Arts this week, students finished the second draft of their short story writing assignment and should be working on the final manuscript which is due on Wednesday.  We are studying root words in vocabulary and will begin picking books for a new novel unit next week.    In Social Studies, we continue learning about the colonies and how the new world took shape.  We will be finishing up with the unit next week and will have our unit test on Thursday.  On Friday, we will have current event day, in which students will be asked to bring in a current event article to discuss with the class.

In Math, we went over prime and composite numbers, and factors and GCF (greatest common factors).  Today we had a great friendly competition on the Factor Game.  Noah Peton beat me at the Factor Game:)!  For the girls in the class, I sent home a permission slip for "Women in Mathematics Day" on Wednesday.  If your daughter is interested in participating, I will accept the form on Monday morning.  In Science, we talked about seasons, climates, and weather.  We will continue with weather next week.  We are looking at a project coming very soon!!!!

Have a FABULUOS Weekend!!!!!!!
