Hi! My name is McKenzie McLaughlin and I will be your 5th grade teacher this
year. I hope you are as excited as I am to learn and grow together!
I grew up in the wonderful city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My family still
lives there so I try to go back and visit whenever I can. I went to
Shippensburg University where I majored in Elementary Education with a minor
in Reading. After graduation, I was a substitute teacher back in Pittsburgh
before I decided to make the move. In January 2005 I accepted a second grade
teaching job at Alvey Elementary. I enjoyed my time there but knew 5th grade
was for me. The following year, FOUR YEARS AGO!, I taught my first class at
Bristow Run and I haven't looked back :-)
A little bit about the outside of school me: I enjoy running, traveling,
visiting Pittsburgh, STEELER SUNDAYS!, hiking, reading, spending time with
friends, trying new things and finding new places to go, and laughing. My
students know I have a habit of finding myself very funny :-)
One of my main focuses as a teacher is being a role model on how to treat
others. I consider my room a community rather than just a place where
students come to learn. I believe in working together and treating others
with respect. I try to lead by example and show students how everyone is
different but we can all appreciate the unique qualities the other person
has. I strongly believe in this and will do my best to bring students up
rather than let anyone bring them down.
I strive to help students succeed and will do anything in my power to help
students realize their strenghts. I will push the students in my class to
achieve their goals and hopefully will make class fun too. During the school
day you can see reading groups, hands on activities, whole group lessons,
partner and group work, and open-ended creative work. I try to make each day
different and do my best to help students become excited for school. We
spend 7 hours a day here and I think laughter and smiles should be a big
part of that!
