PTA Board Meeting Minutes
March 16, 2010
The following members were present Rachel Braxton, Pres., Anthony Johns, VP, Juliet Shaw, Treasurer, Chris Hart, Principal and Lottie Spurlock, CIS Coordinator. The meeting was called to order at 3:15pm by the president.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3rd-7th. The PTA will celebrate teachers and staff on May 4th. Mr. Johns will send out an email to the staff with options for lunch. He will report back with the majority of the responses. We also discussed ideas for gifts/remembrances.
Nomination Committee Juliet Shaw has agreed to chair the committee for the positions that are to be filled for next year: treasurer and recording secretary. She will ask two parents to join the committee to assist with nominations.
A parent link message will go out to all Chalkey families asking for volunteers for these positions. The names of those selected must be up at least 30 days before the vote. The election will be held at the end of May. We will find out how/where the voting can be held.
The PTA budget has been met and exceeded. We need ideas from the grade levels on how we can help them. Ms. Matthews in the clinic has requested a thermometer. We have agreed to purchase—checking the price and features.
We received over 900.00 from the LifeTouch Christmas Picture fundraiser.
We allocated funds for film development of PTA family events.
PTA Board Meeting
January 19, 2010
The following members were present: Principal Christopher Hart, Michelle Haab, VP Bryan Sheetz, VPAnthony Johns, Lottie Spurlock, Patricia Bishop, Pres.Rachel Braxton, and Anna Marquez. Meeting called to order at 6:30 pm by the president.
Community Partnership Meeting, February 2, 2010 9:30am and 6pm. Mr. Hart would like PTA members to help with hospitality for the event. This is school’s first attempt to invite local area churches/faith based groups and businesses to share how we can develop partnership and mentor possibilities. Invites have been mailed.
- Lottie Spurlock, Coordinator, Communities in School (CIS) will speak
- Discuss benefits of community collaboration
- Peel off stickers are at the print shop: “Partners with Chalkley Elementary Schools”
February 15-19 Book Fair
Family Night is February 18. The Elegeba Folklore Society is available to perform on the same night. Discussion tabled until we know how much it will cost, then we will determine what funds will cover it (Bishop motioned, Braxton 2nd, passed.)
Mr. Hart discussed the Chesterfield School Board Budget. Encouraged to be involved and informed.
Tabled discussion of Cash for Gold (Bishop motioned, Sheetz 2nd passed) Need more information
Technology plan: County will provide Promethean Boards, 14 more 2010 covers all of 3rd and part of 2nd grades. Next year all & resource covered. 15 flip cameras-Schools will become wireless and teachers get netbooks (year 3 of the plan)
Braxton will work with Kim Missory 2nd grade teacher on t-shirts. Possible fundraiser for the PTA.
Community Opportunities: Food Lion will close the store for 2 hours in the evening for a free event. Activities include math, nutrition, economics etc. Hart advised FL Chalkley interested. More info to come.
Kroger card must go to Customer Service to have the card scan with the Chalkley Barcode.
Box Tops: Yes we will do it. Kate Pawlyk 2nd grade teacher has agreed to assist VP Johns with the collection.
Cookie Fundraiser
February 18th through March 8th
Brochures go home in Tuesday Folders
Cookie Samples available to families at the Book Fair. We may offer tea, coffee and cocoa. Delivery date: Tuesday, March 23rd 2:50-6:30pm: We will need runners to help with the cookie distribution.
Chalkley 5k on May 15th, after community meeting may be able to create more of a carnival feel. Potential partners could donate goods and services.
“Pops on the Lawn” May 28th at 5:30 pm. Sheetz will begin planning for the Spring Concert.
NEW BUSINESS

Ideas for next year:
Latin Heritage September 18-October18
Latin Ballet (3-4 months in advance, cost $500 additional $1000 for the band as of January 20, 2010.) In addition to the performance, Hispanic Potluck
Possibly an outside event because the time of year.
African American History Month
World Beat with Robert Jospe
Catered African meal by Chef Mamusu
School Wide Adventure Night twice a year (Fall ’10/ Spring ’11)
Based on Harrowgate Model …Teachers will participate in the fall or spring
School Wide Play April or May: The Jungle Book
Third grade Christmas Play not affected by this production
Family Reading Night in conjunction with the 2011 Book Fair
MISCELLANEOUS
Each issue of the newsletter will include box tops, Campbell labels, Food Lion’s Share, Target and Kroger information.
Need more info on the Martial Arts World. Possibly Tuesday/Thursday after school and line up dates with Parks and Recreation.

Old Business:
A Letter will be sent home with each student reminding parents that The Entertainment Books or payments need to be returned by October 1st.
Bryan Sheetz agreed to chair the Reflections art program
October 8 family math night for grades 3-5
October 22 family math night for grades K-2
Anthony Johns agreed to contact Wal-Mart to request donations that will be given away at the family math nights.
Anthony Johns agreed to update the PTA web page as needed.
Bryan Sheetz motioned to table a decision on Skate-A-Way until the contract can be negotiated.
New Business:
Juliet Shaw introduced “Just Between Friends” an electronic way to share information between PTA members.
