an in-class activity. Students choose an event, person or vocabulary term for 
each letter of the alphabet. They must illustrate each. Quality work--must be 
neat, spelled correctly, and fully illustrated/with color. No state names, 
and it must be from what we studied this year. No stick figures--use a pencil 
first and then outline to keep your drawings neat.

05/29/2009: We are reading about the War in Afghanistan and completing a 
timeline handout on Iraq. Students received a study guide for the modern day

board. The question is as follows:

You are preparing a dinner for 5 historical figures that we have studied. Who

What will you choose to talk about at dinner? Lastly, what gift do you think 
each will bring to you, the host?

05/19/2009: Students are working with a partner/individually on a handout in 
which they must decide which Great Society Program helps each scenario. I 
asked for work for those students that needed to finish from yesterday. All 
open book quizzes and Journal #2 was due today for those that needed to

04/27/2009: Students completed a 10 question warmup for SOL review. We 
finished up talking about the Civil Rights Movement and students watched a 
video clip about the Vietnam War. I also talked about the similiarities and 
differences between this war and Korea.

H.W. Students were given study booklets that contain all of the information 
we have learned. Please ask to see this booklet. I asked that they use this 
to study each night until the test. I encouraged them to go through the 
booklet and highlight what they do not know or seem less familiar with and 
have someone call out the questions. They may write in these booklets and use 
these to help them study!

Please use your study booklet to help you study for the SOL Test. I want you 
to feel well-prepared for your test.

04/24/2009: Students completed a 10 question warmup for SOL review. We filled 
in notes about JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis. We watched clips about JFK, 
Cuban Missile Crisis and his assassination and we started looking at the 
Civil Rights Movement.

04/23/2009: Students completed a 10 question warmup for SOL Review. Students 
completed fill-in notes to review what we read yesterday in Lesson 2. 
Students were asked to begin reading through Lesson 3 and filling in answers 
as they read.

04/22/2009: We completed a second warm-up of SOL Review. Students reviewed 
Korean War--fill in notes and we read Chapter 11 Lesson 2 including material 
on Montgomery Bus Boycott, Civil Rights Court Cases/integration of schools, 
and the culture of the 1950s.

on review throughout.

04/20/2009: Not updated until today, because of school computer difficulties. 
There was no homework. The lesson was the same as 04/17/2009, but with 2nd 
and 7th periods only.

04/17/2009: (Meeting with 1st and 6th periods only today). I explained the 
Cold War, United Nations and the arms race. We looked at a map, watched a 
video clip, and read a play about the Berlin Airlift. Students viewed a 
powerpoint with a few key summary points to outline instruction. We read an 
article about the Two Germanys.

4/14/2009: Students completed a warm-up for review. We read about the Navajo

be completed and are due in-class tomorrow. Students were encouraged to turn

Lesson 1. We are beginning our study of War in the Pacific (WWII). We are

03/23/2009: Due to Benchmark Testing in English I will see 1st and 6th 
periods today and 2nd and 7th periods tomorrow. All students will have a test

Today we completed a Chapter 9 Review handout (to practice for the test). We 
checked this together. We read Chapter 10 Lesson 1 and watched a video clip 
about D-day. We viewed a map of Europe highlighting the battles we read 
about. Students completed a "War in Africa and Europe handout"/Cause and 
Effect and Timeline. We checked this together. We reviewed for the Chapter 9 
Test by playing Jeopardy.

The test has been rescheduled for Wednesday. All study guides and extra 
credit are due the day of the test (Wednesday). Remember a parent signature 
is required for the extra credie.

03/19/2009: Students listened to the song, "Rosie the Riveter." Students 
completed an entrance slip for Ch 9 Lesson 3. They were given the opportunity 
to finish the writing activity for Chapter 9. I talked about the extra credit 
opportunity to experience rationing for 1 day. A parent signature is 
required. This is due the day of our Chapter 9 Test, scheduled for Tuesday. 
Handouts were given to those interested in the extra credit opportunity. 
Students were given study guide questions which are due on Tuesda, the day of 
the Chapter 9 Test.

03/18/2009: Homework was collected (WWII crossword puzzle). Students were 
working on an in-class writing assignment about WWII.

03/17/2009: Students completed a warmup for review. We finished reading the 
section about Japanese American Relocation camps. I showed photos of the 
camps. Students completed a quiz on Chapter 9 Lessons 1 and 2.

03/16/2009: We finished reading the last part of the play, a reference to 
Japanese American relocation. We read Lesson 3 and viewed photos about 
rationing, women's war effort, etc.

your 1st period teacher if you have not done so.

03/13/2009: Students completed a comprehension check as a warmup. Homework 
was collected from last night. We watched a video clip about the Lend-Lease 
Act. Students participated in a play about Pearl Harbor.
H.W. Students will have a quiz on Chapter 9 Lessons 1 and 2 on Tuesday. 
Please review these two sections.

NOTE: REPORT CARDS go home today. Please have your envelope signed and then 
returned to your 1st period teacher.

03/10/2009: Students completed a warm-up that required them to match the

03/06/2009: Students completed an EE slip for Chapter 9 Lesson 1. A study 
guide checklist was distributed for the cumulative test to be given on 
Wednesday. Students were asked to look over it and ask me questions. This was 
a list of topics that students should know that have been covered up through 
our study of the Great Depression. The test has been scheduled for Wednesday. 
We reviewed some today in class. We also watched a few video clips to 
summarize content from Ch 9 Lesson 1. Any extra credit assignment trackers 
were collected.
H.W. Begin studying for the test on Wednesday. Look over and review the 
topics listed on the checklist, particularly topics that are unfamiliar to 
you.

03/05/2009: Students are finishing the Chapter 9 Lesson 1 questions. These 
were re-collected today. We also worked together on a handout called, "The 
Conflict Begins." This was collected as well.

2/25/2009: Students were given the opportunity to finish the writing 
assignment assigned yesterday. All papers are due today. The study guide will 
be collected tomorrow before the test is taken. These questions should help 
them as they prepare for the test. We reviewed some today as well.

2/24/2009: Students are working on an in-class writing assignment. Students 
were to complete the Venn Diagram if they did not finish from yesterday.

2/23/2009: Students were to finish the new deal handout if they did not 
finish from Friday. They were to complete a Venn Diagram comparing and 
contrasting statements about Hoover and FDR. Students were provided with 
study guide questions.

Chapter 8, The Great Depression.)

2/20/2009: Students watched a video clip about the New Deal Programs and 
FDR's approach to solving the economic problems of the Great Depression. 
Students analyzed political cartoon related to FDR, Hoover and the New Deal. 
I read letters of Desperation written by people during the era to the 
President and his wife, Eleanor. Homework was collected.

02/16/2009: Presidents' Day

02/13/2009: Students completed a warm-up to review what we have studied this 
week. Students completed a quiz on Chapter 8 Lessons 1 and 2. We began 
looking at Lesson 3 of Chapter 8 with FDR's approach to solving the problems 
of the Great Depression. Any Chapter 8 Lesson 2 questions were collected from 
those that had to finish these for homework last night.

02/12/2009: Students watched a video clip about the dust bowl. I read an 
article about farmers and the dust bowl. I read about John Steinbeck and 
passed around his book, The Grapes of Wrath. Students participated in a play 
about the Great Depression which summarizes all of what we have talked about 
so far. Lesson 2 questions were given back for students to finish. If they 
did not finish in class they were asked to complete it for homework. It is 
due tomorrow.

of Chapter 8). If you are not finished with your Chapter 8 Lesson 2

02/11/2009: We discussed the Dust Bowl. Students viewed a clip about 
Hoovervilles, the Bonus Army and the Dust Bowl. Students began working on 
Chapter 7 Lesson 2 questions. I read a success story about the game MONOPOLY.
Students received printed grade sheets to update them on their progress. 
Midterms have been postponed, therefore a signature is not required at this 
time.

02/10/2009: Students in 1st, 2nd and 7th completed an entrance slip to review 
key concepts from Chapter 8 Lesson 1 which outlined causes of the Great 
Depression. We reviewed our key indicators of the economy and went on to read 
and outline the conditions of the Great Depression. Students examined photos 
from the Great Depression including Hoovervilles, breadlines, soup kitchens 
and the general despair of the era. We also discussed Hoover's 
philosophy/beliefs about the Great Depression and his efforts to help 
businesses/banking. I asked for any Chapter 8 Lesson 1 questions that had not 
been turned in. Those that were absent were asked to complete this and were 
provided with the opportunity to get this handout.

02/09/2009: We read an article to review the causes of the Great Depression. 
Students were assigned questions 1-10 on a handout given in class. They were 
to answer using complete sentences. Each answer could be found in the text.
I also read an article that explained the stock market and the stock market 
crash. We listed out causes of the Great Depression together on the board.

02/06/2009: Today we began our study of the Great Depression. We talked about 
indicators of the economy and read lesson 1. We completed a flow chart and 
watched a video clip about the stock market crash.

02/05/2009: Students completed the 1920s test.

02/03/2009: (2nd period and 7th period today only) We completed the open book 
quiz, worked on the study guide and completed a review practice test. 
Students that had completed study guides were allowed to check their answers 
and participate in a review game. The study guide was given last week as 
Friday night's homework. Those that did not have completed study guides were 
given time in class to use their textbook to complete this.
H.W. Test is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) on Chapter 7. The last day I 
will take a quiz review is tomorrow. Students were reminded if I had not 
received their homework (Who's who handout).

02/02/2009: Students completed an open book quiz. We checked a study guide 
and completed a review practice test. Students also participated in a review 
game in preparation for the Roaring 20s test, scheduled for Wednesday. (1st 
and 6th periods only.) I will be meeting with my 2nd and 7th periods 
tomorrow. Students that did not turn in their homework on Friday had an 
opportunity to complete this and turn this in for late credit. Students were 
reminded that Quiz Reviews are due Wednesday and will not be accepted late.

01/30/2009: Homework was collected today. Students are provided with an 
opportunity to complete a quiz review. (1/2 pt. per correction--Students make 
corrections on a separate piece of paper; all corrections must be written in

01/29/2009: Students are studying Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. We 
completed a warm-up activity for review.

01/28/2009: Students are studying F. Scott Fitzgerald, the novelist who 
wrote the Great Gatsby. We explored the main ideas of this book written in 
the context of the rags-to-riches party themes of the 1920s.
No homework.


01/26/2009: We are studying Jacob Lawrence, a painter (The Great Migration) 
and the works of Georgia O'Keeffe (painter). We read an article about the 
Harlem Renaissance and an article about the Great Migration. We viewed a 
Powerpoint presentation of both painters. We took some notes in which we 
outlined the story of the Great Migration through examining Jacob Lawrence's 
work. (brief notes including photos of his paintings)

01/23/2009: We are studying Langston Hughes. Students were to complete a quiz 
on Chapter 7 Lesson 1 and 2. I share some poetry by Langston Hughes and read 
some facts about his life, including his childhood, his desire to be a poet 
and the struggles he faced. We also read poems written by another poet about 
Langston Hughes.

01/22/2009: I asked for any late projects. Students compared and contrasted 
Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. We read about their biographies from an 
article and answered statements that applied to each jazz musician.
H.W. Study for your quiz on Chapter 7 Lesson 1 and 2 which will be tomorrow. 
(re-scheduled from last Friday.)

01/15/2009: We are beginning our study of the famous musicians, artists, and 
writers of the 1920s. We are listening to some Jazz music as we read aloud 
Chapter 7 Lesson 3. We are completing a comprehension check to help us 
outline the contributions of these people. Projects were collected today. 
Band members were told yesterday to turn in these projects today. I went 
around to each classroom and reminded them this morning to turn in their 
project today.
H.W. Quiz tomorrow on Chapter 7 lessons 1 and 2; Please study. Also those 
that did not turn in a project today can turn it in for late credit tomorrow.


01/14/2009: Today we are viewing 2 video clips discussing the contributions 
of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. We are also discussing Prohibition, 
taking some notes and viewing a Powerpoint on the fashion/fads of the 1920s 
era.
H.W. Projects are due tomorrow. A quiz on Chapter 7 Lesson 1 and 2 has been 
scheduled for Friday. Review your vocabulary and key ideas from these two 
sections using your textbook/class notes.

01/13/2009: We are working in the lab today. I have granted a 1 day extension 
for the project deadline. Student mini-projects will be due on Thursday to 
allow students 1 additional night to work independently at home on their 
project. Students have been given 2 class periods to work in the computer lab 
and were encouraged to print information to take home if needed.
H.W. Please work on your project tonight and tomorrow night if needed. 
Projects are due Thursday. Have fun and remember to follow the requirements 
on the grading rubric and assignment sheet.

01/12/2009: Students are working on a class project. They were provided with 
an assignment sheet and a grading rubric. Students have a menu of options. We 
will be working in the computer lab/library today and plan to work in the 
computer lab tomorrow. These "mini-projects" are due Wednesday.

01/09/2009: We finished reading lesson 2 of Chapter 7. Students were to 
complete the questions section by section as we read together. If they did 
not finish they can simply give this to me completed on Monday. We also 
discussed the project that we will begin on Monday. I decided to share this 
with them so they can be thinking about what they might want to do. A menu of 
options was presented, with an assignment sheet that will be distributed on 
Monday as we begin. If time permitted I share some photos of the 1920s.

01/07/2009: I collected the homework from last night. We read an article and 
completing a check for understanding within the article reading about 
Harding, Coolidge, Farmers, Workers and the Stock Market during the 1920s. We 
began reading and completing questions from our reading of Chapter 7 Lesson 2.

12/16/2008 We are checking the study guide if we have not done so. All

12/15/2008 Students were given a study guide to complete. We checked the 
handout on labor unions. Students were offered an extra credit project that 
will be due on Thursday. A grading rubric was provided and poster paper if 
needed. Extra credit projects will NOT be accepted for late credit. The test 
will be on Chapter 6: World War I and be given on Thursday.

12/11/2008 Students were asked to turn in any of this week's handouts that 
they needed to finish for homework. This includes Over There, WWI Crossword 
and Woodrow Wilson's Words. Students participated in a play about WWI (6th 
period did this yesterday). We then worked on an article about Labor Unions 
and answered questions on a handout about the article to check for 
comprehension of what we read.

12/10/2008 Students worked on finishing any handout from: Over There, WWI 
Crossword Puzzle and Woodrow Wilson's Words. If time permitted we will

12/9/2008 Students finished the Over There Handout and were asked to start 
the crossword puzzle. These are in-class assignments to reinforce what we 
have been learning. They were reminded that they need to have any quiz 
reviews (corrections written in a complete sentence) by tomorrow.

Woodrow Wilson. Students began working on a handout titled, "Over There...".

complete sentence on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the quiz. This 
is due on Wednesday.

12/05/2008: Students completed a quiz on Chapter 6 Lessons 1 and 2. We looked 
at the changes in geography following WWI. We read about Wilson's 14 points 
and the League of Nations.

12/03/2008: Today students completed a graded warm-up in which they were to 
list the Allied and Central Powers of WWI. I collected the homework that was 
due today, Chapter 6, Lesson 2 questions. We read articles about trench 
warfare, poison gas, doughboys and life on the homefront. I showed a video 
clip that showed life in the trenches.
H.W. Students will have a quiz on Chapter 6 Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 on Friday. 
Please study vocabulary and key ideas from these two sections of the 
textbook. It will be matching, fill in the blank w/ word box provided and 
require them to know the Allied and Central powers, much like our warm-up 
today.


12/02/2008: We read about Alvin C. York and discussed the Selective Service 
Act.

11/21/2008: Today I called out the list of students who have submitted the 
following: 
1.) Chapter 6 Lesson 1 questions (HW assigned on Wednesday)
2.) KWL chart on the sinking of the Lusitania (Classwork from Wednesday)
3.) Open Book quiz in preparation for the benchmark (HW assigned on Tuesday)

I wanted to make certain that students knew exactly what I had indeed 
received from my substitute teacher. Copies were given to those that raised 
their hand and requested these.

We finished the video and any work that we needed to catch up from the work 
assigned while I was out. Any Chapter 6 Lesson 2 questions assigned are NOT 
due. They were instructed to place these in their binder it will be revisited 
later after we have read the lesson.
I rescheduled our benchmark for Monday.

11/19/2008: I have a substitute teacher for today.
Students are to complete a KWL chart on the sinking of the Lusitania. The 
homework should be collected from last night as well. This was a take home 
open book quiz.

11/18/2008: Students are testing on Chapter 5 today. They were asked to 
complete an open book/take home quiz in preparation for a benchmark test to 
be given on Friday. If time permitted they were to begin working on Chapter 6 
Lesson 1 questions.

11/17/2008: We are continuing our study of WWI. Students were reminded to 
study their study guides in preparation for the test on Chapter 5 to be given 
tomorrow. In 1st and 2nd period we completed a warm-up to put the story of 
WWI in order. We also completed another review of Booker T. Washington and 
W.E.B. DuBois. Students completed the graphic organizer. We reviewed the 
Central and Allied Powers and the MAIN causes of the war. 
In 6th and 7th periods we watched a video clip of the US enters the war. They 
also worked on Chapter 6 Lesson 1 questions from the text and completed the 
WU to put the story of WWI in order. 7th period also completed the graphic 
organizer.

11/14/2008: We outlined the MAIN causes again (militarism, alliances, 
imperialism and nationalism). Students completed a sheet and wrote the 
definition and then illustrated their own symbols for each. We then colored a 
map showing the Allied and Central Powers. Students were reminded of the 
memory strategies (Girls Ask Boys Out, or Boys Ask Girls Out to remember 
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire.) We also 
discussed "BUS-FIRE" which represents the Allied Powers. They are encouraged 
to think up their own strategy to help them remember the key players of WWI. 
Extra credit--assignment trackers were collected for the 2nd six-weeks 
grading period.

11/13/2008: We checked the study guides and began our study of WWI by reading 
and outlining the MAIN causes, who fought who and why?

11/12/2008: Today we concluded our study of the Progressive Movement. 
Students took a quiz on Chapter 5, Lessons 3, 4, and 5. We filled in a 
handout about "REFORM" and watched a summary clip about the era. Students 
began working on a study guide. In 6th period we were able to check this 
today. We plan to start World War I tomorrow. Students were informed of a 
benchmark test that will be given on CPS next week.

11/11/2008: Reminder to students that today is Veteran's Day, followed by a 
brief history. In 1st and 2nd periods students worked on comparing and 
contrasting Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. We completed a Venn 
Diagram. In 6th and 7th we are continuing our study of early Civil Rights.

11/10/2008: In 1st and 2nd period we read about the Triangle Shirtwaist 
Factory fire. We watched a video clip and I read an excerpt. In 6th and 7th

11/7/2008: Today we completed a warm-up for review. This was about 
cause/effect and tied in with our study of the Progressives. In 1st and 2nd 
we read about the Progressive Movement and checked for understanding by 
completing some fill in the blanks. In 6th and 7th we are examining the 
Triangle Shirtwaist Company and the rise of labor unions. This will include a 
video clip, short article and excerpts from the novel, "Triangle": A Fire 
that changed America. We also will tie our some class discussion to the video 
we watched yesterday about Tovah and her initiative with women's rights and 
labor unions.

focuses on immigration, cities, safety conditions in factories and labor

11/5/2008: We are continuing our study of the Progressives. In 1st and 2nd 
period we completed our graphic organizer and read an article about the 
Progressives. We watched a brief video clip and completed a 3-2-1 close 
activity in which students listed 3 changes the Progressives wanted, 2 people 
who wanted change and 1 word that means reform (change). In afternoon classes 
we will be continuing our study of Progressives with completing the graphic 
organizer and reading an article summarizing the movement.

10/24/2008 Today we completed a warm-up (mixed review) together as a class. 
We then checked the Chapter 5, Lesson 3 questions. We watched video clips 
relating to the assembly line, Marconi and the Wright Brothers. If time 
permitted we read from the SOL Coach book. Midterms were given out today. 
These require a parent/guardian signature and each student will need to 
return these to the appropriate teacher. Congratulations to my 1st and 7th 
period classes for everyone bringing their textbooks to class yesterday.

line as a class activity. Each student became a worker on the assembly line 
and we then discussed the advantages/disadvantages to this process and how 
Ford could use this idea to make cars more affordable. We have recorded our 
results to compare among classes to see how we were able to balance time and 
quality. We watched a video clip about Henry Ford.

10/20/2008 Today we completed a warm-up called, "Find the Errors". This was a 
mixed review. We then worked on a Quiz Review, in which students were given 
the opportunity to correct their mistakes from the quiz using their textbook. 
Corrections must be on a separate sheet of paper and in a complete sentence 
and stapled to the quiz when returned. 
Some credit will be given (1/2 point per correction)to encourage students to 
complete this assignment. Students were also to work on the summary about the 
Spanish-American War. A grading rubric/assignment sheet was given on Friday. 
This is due tomorrow in addition to the quiz review. Students had time in 
class today to work on both of these assignments.

as a quiz.

10/02/2008 We completed a warm-up for review (fact or opinion). We completed

Monday. A grading rubric and checklist was given to each student. Students 
worked on a 4-square pre-writing assignment today in class. This must be 
turned in with the final copy and the grading rubric/checklist on Monday.

questions aloud). Students were then to begin to answer Chapter 4, Lesson 5 
questions. These are due tomorrow. Remember to write your answers using 
complete sentences.

Students completed a warm-up test review activity. We read the article, 
Immigration, Migration and American Industry. We underlined the reasons

This is a book about Thomas Edison's life and his inventions. In 1st and 2nd 
we viewed the clips about the steel and oil industries in addition to our 
book reading.

business, including leaders. If time permitted we completed the Rise of 
Industries handout 1-4.

expansion. We completed our graphic organizer for Chapter 4, Lesson 4. We 
read an article about the Transcontinental Railroad and viewed a video clip.

09/11/2008
In first period we read an article about the Nez Perce Indians and answered 
questions about the reading aloud. The following writing assignment was given.
All classes: Students were given a writing assignment, in which they are 
required to read an article and answer three questions. We discussed good 
writing practices and the expectations for each paragraph in question one to 
be at least 5 sentences each. Suggestions were given for how to approach a 
reading selection (highlighting important point you want to include, etc). 
Students were informed that the writing assignment must be in their own 
words. The purpose is to read, think and write!
In 2nd, 6th and 7th I read an article about Custer's Last Stand and then gave 
out the writing assignment. In 2nd we also finished the brief clips from 
yesterday.

started and to ask me questions if they needed to. They will need to finish

forms. Thanks! Also, if you have not paid the $3.00 locker fee, please bring 
your money to your advisory teacher.

Social Studies: Today in Social Studies we checked the USA Challenge and the 
continents/oceans paper. We are continuing in basic geography and beginning 
to place states into regions. Students were given a U.S. Map to color and 
label. This is due on Tuesday, August 26.

A handout of the regions, and a U.S map was provided. Time was given in class 
to help students get started.

Today in Social Studies I explained our classroom 
rules/procedures/expectations and materials needed. I also presented an 
overview of topics we will study this year. We followed with a USA Challenge 
and Intro to Geography handout. We clozed by asking students about states 
they traveled to this summer.
