How do I find a book?
Take a short tour around the media center. You'll see that on the
shelf fronts are labels which will make your search very easy. They
match the call numbers on the spines of our books. All books are put on the
shelves in alphabetical order according to the first three letters of the
author's last name. Just follow those labels around the section until you come
to the letter of the alphabet that begins the author's name. Then slow
down and start looking close because you are on the right track!
How do I find books using the Card Catalog?
You can find books in the card catalog by searching the author's
name, title, subject or keywords.
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader helps stimulate excitement in reading in three
steps:
1. Students read a book three times at their own pace.
2. Students take a quiz which helps to motivate and monitor
reading practice.
3. You get immediate information feedback on the reading and
vocabulary progress of each student.
Why do I need a bookmark?
Protect the spine of the book by always using a bookmark rather
than placing it face down on the pages or using a post it, which leaves glue
residue. Do not use objects not meant to be bookmarks, such as pencils.
Anything too thick will break the book's spine.
Why do I need to return my books?
Return your books on time so others may enjoy those books.
How to select a good book?
Check the cover. Read the summary on the back cover. Look at the
illustrations and skim the text. Look at what your friends are
reading. Ask them for recommendations. Read books written by your favorite
authors. Read about your hobbies or other special interests. Browse through the
fiction and the non-fiction section of your media center.
What is the five finger test ?
Five finger test is used to check the reading level of a book:
1. Open the book to the middle. Select a full page of text.
2. Read the page.
3. Put one finger up for every word you can not pronounce or do
not know.
4. If you get five(5) fingers up on one page, the book is too
difficult to read independently.
5. If you do not get any fingers up, but are reading very slowly
and decoding almost every word, you will not enjoy the book.
