Why does my child have to read every night?
Reading each night increases comprehension and fluency.
Why does my child have to wear tennis shoes every day?
Second graders go outside every day for recess. They run two
laps before starting their play time. They play kickball,
soccer, basketball, jump rope,and play on equipment. All of
these activities require safe shoes!
Do I need to sit with my child while he/she does homework?
Your child should be able to complete spelling and math
assignments independently.
How can I help my child learn his/her facts?
Practice each night with flashcards.
Talk about the facts and how they are related.
Practice doubles, doubles plus one, and sums adding to 10.
Remember turnaround facts.
Emphasize that subtraction is really figuring out the related
addition fact.
Practice, practice, practice!
How can I teach my child to round?
Remember the rhyme:
0 to 4 round down to the floor,
5 to 9 climb up the vine.
Why do we have paragraph comprehension quizzes?
These comprehension quizzes assess whether the student is re-
reading for information. This is a critical skill for reading for
meaning and for SOL success.
What does WWW mean on a dictation sentence?
If the word is incorrect and it has a WWW by it, this means the
word is posted on our word wall and is right there for the
student to spell correctly! We call these sight words.
Are study guides given for social studies and science quizzes?
Normally, study guides will not be given for quizzes. Quizzes
are given to test listening and understanding of current concepts
that have been taught and reviewed.
What is the purpose of retelling?
If a student can stop and retell what he/she has read, he/she is
reading for meaning. They are remembering what the have read and
can make sense out of the text. Many times children can decode
or read the words but forget that the text actually has meaning.
