Winter Play Set for January
Almost, Maine Examines Love and Loss
FHS Theatre will present the romantic comedy Almost, Maine as the winter production
on January 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 7 p.m. and January 15 at 2 p.m. in the Addison
Lightfoot Auditorium. Almost, Maine
tells the stories of nine couples in various stages of their relationships, all
in a remote town in northern Maine called Almost. First produced off-Broadway
in 2006, the play recently supplanted A
Midsummer Night’s Dream to become the most produced play in North American
high schools.
“A theatre colleague suggested this play to me, and I
immediately fell in love with it when I read it,” says FHS Theatre Director
Kevin N. Mettinger. “You really become invested in these characters – they’re
very believable, and I think the audience will identify similarities between
the challenges each couple has and their own relationships,” he said. Mettinger added that he has since recommended the play
to other schools, including Loudoun County High School, which staged the play
in mid-November.
Mettinger likened the fictional town of Almost to the fictional
town of Cicely, Alaska, depicted in the 1990s television show Northern Exposure. The TV show even has
an episode centered around the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights – a
significant plot point in Almost, Maine.
The cast for Almost,
Maine includes Freshmen Jett Zopp and Amanda Hall as Pete and Ginette in
“Prologue/Interlogue/Epilogue”; Seniors Will Rodenberg and Bailey Hutchinson as
East and Glory in “Her Heart”; Sophomore Patrick Duggan as Jimmy, and Seniors
Ellen Wilson and Libby Wilmore as Sandrine and Waitress in “Sad and Glad”;
Senior Caitlin Duggan as Marvalyn and Junior Thomas Hooker as Steve in “This
Hurts”; Senior Brooke Hahne as Gayle and
Freshman Jason Klopp as Lendall in “Getting it Back”; Junior Andrew Warzinski
as Randy and Senior Stephen Kutzleb as Chad in “They Fell”; Senior Derek White
as Phil and Junior Marina Finelli as Marci in “Where it Went”; Seniors
Annamaria Ward and Sage Maxwell as Hope and Man in “Story of Hope”; and Junior
Sadie Carr as Rhonda and Sophomore Ian Soule as Dave in “Seeing the Thing”.
Senior Amy Wiedenfeld serves as production stage manager and
Junior Andrew Warzinski serves as assistant director. Junior Maddie Lenhart
will be the dramaturg for the show. Juniors Maddie Lemelin and Sean Trapani are
costume designers, and Senior Bethany Burress is both lighting and sound
designer. Sophomore Jenny Elliott is the props manager.
Tickets will be $7.50 for adults and $5 for students of all
ages and adults 60 and over. For more information, go to the FHS Theatre
website at www.fhstheatre.org,
or contact Mr. Mettinger at 540.347.6100 x2317 or by e-mail at fhstheatre@fcps1.org.
FHS Theatre wins Evergreen District One-Act Play Festival
1st Trophy in 10 Years Goes to Student-Directed Piece
Fauquier High School placed first at the Evergreen District One-Act Play Festival, held at Liberty High School on Saturday, November 5. Fauquier's production was the first among four plays, including entries from Liberty High School, Kettle Run High School, and Warren County High School. Fauquier not only won the festival, but took home awards for Best Actor and Best Actress as well, for Seniors Sage Maxwell and Ellen Wilson. The winning entry, For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls, by Christopher Durang, is a parody of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie. The production was directed by Junior Thomas Hooker, who represented FHS at the 2011 Virginia Governor's School for the Arts in the theatre program. The cast includes Wilson as Amanda, Maxwell as Lawrence, Junior Andrew Warzinski as Tom, and Senior Bailey Hutchinson as Ginny. Senior Brooke Hahne serves as stage manager for the production, and Senior Bethany Burress is the lightboard operator. Ms. Melanie Ankney serves as faculty adviser for the play.

FHS Theatre Festival of One-Acts
Original Musical
Highlights FHS Play Festival
Fauquier High School Theatre will present its 10th
Annual Festival of One-Acts on October 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. and on October 30 at
2 p.m. in the Addison Lightfoot Auditorium. This year’s student-directed
one-acts feature three comedies, including one by an FHS alumnus, one “American
fable” about immortality, and one student-written musical. One of the five
plays will represent FHS in this year’s Evergreen District One-Act Play Festival
on November 5, hosted by Liberty High School.
Director Bailey Hutchinson (Class of 2012) will present The Hungerers, by acclaimed playwright
William Saroyan. From www.samuelfrench.com:
“The hunger of these
hungerers is not a hunger for bread alone, although that hunger is beautiful
enough. It is a hunger for immortality. The simple immortality which comes
about when human beings rid themselves of all world-imposed absurdities and
know the foolishness of pride.” The cast features: Kyra Manor, Daneel Patel,
Will Rodenberg, Annalise Sears, and Annamaria Ward. Danielle DiLisi serves as
stage manager for the production.
Thomas Hooker (Class of 2013) directs Christopher Durang’s For Whom The Southern Belle Tolls, a
parody of the Tennessee Williams play The
Glass Menagerie. In this version, young and fragile Lawrence must endure
his mother Amanda’s overbearing interference in his life, when all he really
wants to do is play with his collection of glass cocktail stirrers. She
attempts to set him up on a date with the Feminine Caller, Ginny, who works
with her son, Tom. The cast includes: Ellen Wilson as Amanda; Sage Maxwell as
Lawrence; Andrew Warzinski as Tom; and Bailey Hutchinson as Ginny. Brooke Hahne
serves as stage manager.
Sadie Carr and Marina Finelli (Class of 2013) co-direct an
original work, House of Magique,
written by FHS alumnus Addison Hoff (Class of 2009). Described by the directors
as somewhat similar to the plots of the “Scooby Doo” cartoon series, the play
follows the inhabitants of a house who pretend they are ghosts to discourage a
potential buyer. The cast features: Brooke Hahne as Celeste, Stephen Kutzleb as
Carlyle, Libby Wilmore as Harriet, and Patrick Duggan as Tiberius. Sadie Carr
also serves as stage manager.
Caitlin Duggan (Class of 2012) wrote and will direct The Lost Boy, a musical one-act inspired
by Peter Pan. After suffering
rejection from the woman he loves, a man regresses to childhood to deal with
his emotional pain. The cast features: Anthony Finelli as Leo; Bittania Teshome
as Rosie; Christopher Campos-Pérez as Roscoe; Derek White as Guy; Amanda Hall
as Keshto; Jenny Elliott as the doctor; and Sean Trapani as Will. Annie Harris
serves as stage manager and choreographer.
Andrew Warzinski (Class of 2013) directs Jonathan Dorf’s The White Pages, an absurd comic tale
about a bookstore which sells books with no writing in them. All is well until
a customer complains. The cast features: Samantha Sowder as Nancy; Thomas
Hooker as Robert; Michael Fleet as Toto; and Jasmine Stephens, Natalie Glenn,
and Baylee Alerding as customers. Bethany Burress serves as stage manager.
The Festival of One-Acts will be performed for one weekend
only – October 28-30. Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on
Sunday. Tickets are $7.50 for adults and $5.00 for seniors (age 60 and up) and
students of all ages. Light concessions will be sold. For more information,
contact Kevin Mettinger at 540.347.6100 or visit www.fhstheatre.org .
