Study Guide: Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Terms to know: Mass - a measure of the amount of matter. Volume - the measure of the amount of space occupied by matter. Dissolve - to become liquid by being put into water. All common substances are made of matter. Matter occurs in three states: solids, liquids, and gases. *Matter can change from one state to another. When matter changes from one state to another, these changes are referred to as physical changes. Changes from solid to liquid to gas require heat energy to make the transformation. Different types of materials react differently when mixed with water. Some liquids will mix with water while others will not. Some solids will dissolve in water while others will not. The temperature of the water affects how easily a substance will dissolve in it. All materials are composed of parts too small to be seen without magnification. Physical properties remain the same even if a material (e.g., plastic, paper, metal, ice) is reduced in size.
