All math facts with sums of 10 or less and the related subtraction facts have
now been introduced. It is important that the children MEMORIZE these facts,
so that they do not need to count them on their fingers.
If your child is not able to correctly complete most of the facts on the
daily math Speed Drill, and is still on the red addition level of Math Power,
this is a sign that he/she needs to work on these facts. Flash cards,
computer games and oral math drills are all good ways to practice these facts.
In addition to basic math facts, we are now reading clocks to every five
minutes and counting all combinations of coins to one dollar. Many first
graders still need additional practice with these skills. Using actual coins
and clocks will make this more interesting for your child.
