Multicultural Education

At JW Alvey, we strive to make multicultural education a year round event.
The emphasis is on meeting the academic, social, and cultural needs of ALL
students. In an effort to keep current, Alvey sends at least one
representative to all county multicultural meetings and the annual Closing
the Gap summit.

This year, one of our Closing the Gap goal is to improve attendance for all
students at JW Alvey. Administrators, counselors, our social worker, and our
attendance officer have been working together to make personal contacts to
families and to encourage positive attendance habits. Our results over the
years have shown the positive effect of these efforts. We believe that
excellent attendance is key to excellent academic and personal/social school
experience.

Additionally, counselors and social workers are working on decreasing the
academic achievement gap. We aim to improve academic performance on report
card grades (both in content and in work habits/listening) and on the SOLs.
We do individual student progress meetings, as well as run small groups for
study skills and test anxiety.

The fifth annual Multicultural Night was held in spring of 2011.
Families enjoyed food from around the world, viewed global student art, and
participated in/watch a dinner theatre show reflecting cultural heritage. We
hope that you will join us for Multicultural Night in spring of 2012!

On October 18th, Alvey students participated in National Mix it Up at Lunch
Day, an initiative from Teaching Tolerance. The students had a great time
sitting by new classmates at lunch, and asking them get-to-know-you
questions. Ms. Henry and Mrs. Jefferson served as deejays in the cafeteria,
so that students could celebrate with fun music. Additionally, our SCA and
Student Leadership League members worked hard to plan, advertise, and help
during this event.

This year, Ms. Henry continues her position as Co-President of the
Virginia Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development. She hopes
that her involvement in this organization will bring her professional
development that will enrich the program at Alvey.
