LANGUAGE ARTS- Virginia Beach is currently using the Scott-Foresman reading series. It is a
whole language and phonetic approach to reading. I will instruct in a whole group setting as well as small groups.
Students will be grouped according to their reading ability. These groups will be flexible.
I will be supplementing Scott-Foresman with another reading program called "Making Meaning".
The children will also be reading silently for 30 minutes each day and responding to the literature. They will be improving in their ability to select books at their appropriate reading level.
Some of the important reading strategies that will be implemented during the second grading period are...
predicting
questioning
charts, maps, and graphs
dictionaries
table of contents
poetry
story elements
fiction and non-fiction
3 and 4 step directions
author's purpose
comparing/contrasting
steps in a process
graphic sources
sequence
subject/predicate
MATH- We are using the "Everyday Math Series" from the University of Chicago. It is a spiral based learning and touches on the various strands in mathematics over and over. The students use a variety of manipulatives and games. I am excited about this program and feel that the children come away with a deep understanding of numbers.
Unit 10 will include...

estimating the value of two items
modeling fractions as equal parts of a collection
