B.S. in Geology, College of William and Mary - 2003
M.S. in Geosciences, Mississippi State University - in progress!
I began teaching at Kecoughtan in the fall of 2003. I taught Earth Science
for two years, and have been teaching chemistry ever since! I am also the
coach for the Academic Team. Over the summers and part-time throughout the
year, I am a Ranger Technician for Newport News Park. In what little spare
time I get, I love to read, spend time with friends, play video games, go
camping, go fossil hunting, play/listen to music, and practice karate.
Chemistry is the central science - it ties together all the other sciences and
has applications in every aspect of your life. There are millions of chemical
reactions that happen in your body everyday without you even knowing it or
thinking about it (for example, the very act of breathing is a chemical
reaction)! Chemistry is not just for nerds, geeks, and science people.
Without chemistry, we would not have great things like plastic, batteries,
cars, clothing, and medicine. The purpose of this course is to learn the
basic principles that govern the world we live in, even though they may go
unobserved and unappreciated by most of us. It will be difficult, trying, and
will probably leave you frustrated beyond your wits - such is the nature of
the beast! However, it is very rewarding, and through studying chemistry you
will learn problem solving skills, good study habits, and critical thinking
skills that will help you in every aspect of your life - whether or not you
choose to pursue a career in science.
