Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program which evaluates students’
comprehension. This is a nation-wide program, the largest of its kind in the
United States. It has been used at all school levels (primary through high
school) for many years.

In order for a student to take an AR quiz at Nottoway Intermediate School,
he/she must first choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book. There are
over 100,000 books that are available, and quizzes are being added weekly.
Books in the NIS library that are AR are identified with bright yellow
stickers, which display title, reading level, points, and quiz number.

After reading the book, the student goes to the AR site on the school
computer, logs in using his/her username and password, and takes the quiz.
Students are awarded points only if they pass the quiz, and receive them
based on the percent correct.

Teachers generate reports on their students throughout the year, so they can
monitor progress with reading level, and quiz grades.
