WATER PROPERTIES VOCABULARY WORDS

1. surface tension - tightness across the surface of the water that is caused
by the polar molecules pulling on each other.

2. solution - mixture that forms when one substance is dissolved into another.

3. evaporation - process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid
absorbs enough energy to change to the gaseous state.

4. condensation - process by which a gas changes into a liquid.

5. suspension - a mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated
by settling or filtration.

6. solute- substance that is present in a solutioon in a smaller amount and
dissolved by the solvent.

7. solvent- the substance that does the dissolving.

8. freezing point- temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to
a solid. CELSIUS - 0 degrees FARENHEIT - 32 degrees.

9. boiling point - temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to
a gas. CELSIUS - 100 degrees FARENHEIT - 212 degrees

MATTER VOCABULARY WORDS

Molecule – two or more atoms that are bonded together form a particle.

Chemical bond – the force that holds two atoms together.

Electrons – carry a negative charge (-)

Neutrons – no charge/ neutral (o)

Protons – have a positive charge (+)

Nucleus – the tiny central core of an atom.

Atom – the smallest particle of an element.

Chemical change – a change in matter that produces new substances.

Physical change – a change that alters the form or appearance of a material
but does not make the material into another substance.

Mixture – made from two or more substances – elements, compounds, or both –
that are in the same place but are not chemically combined.

Compound – a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a
set ratio, or proportion.

Element – a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by
chemical or physical means.

Chemical property – a characteristic that is observed when a substance
interacts with another substance.

Physical property – a characteristic of a substance that can be observed
without changing the substance into something else.

Chemistry – the study of properties of matter and how matter changes.

Substance – a single kind of matter that has distinct physical and chemical
properties.

Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space.
