Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to take this opportunity to say hello to you and to welcome
your child to the 2009-2010 school year. I sincerely hope it will be a
rewarding and educational year for your child.
As reflected in your child's schedule, students will be changing classes
throughout the day. Therefore, it is imperative that your child comes to
class on time with the necessary supplies ech day. Please carefully review
the policies listed in the agenda book with your child, especially the tardy
policy. The agenda book will be your child's assignment book as well as
his/her pass to travel anywhere he/she goes during the day.
This year the grading scale is as follows: A 94-100; B 88-93; C 81-87;
D 75-80; and below 75, F. In order to keep you better informed, progress
reports will be sent home periodically during each grading period. Please
sign and return to school promptly. If you have questions or concerns, you
may contact me at NIS (434) 292-5353.
I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
Sincerely,
Verna L. Rhoades

Additional Information
The Language Arts Grade is calculated in the following manner:
Homework 20%; Classwork 25%; Read-Up 15%; Tests 40%.
End of the 2nd Six Weeks November 10
In Language Arts this year, students will be introduced to 180 new
vocabulary words in a program called Word of the Day. Five words will be
given Monday of each week and assessed on Friday. Students are required to
know the definition, synonyms, antonyms, part of speech, and correct usage
in a sentence for each. The information is kept by the student in his/her
Language Arts binder. I have included in this announcement the first(30)
vocabulary words for the first six weeks. We will review the words in class
weekly. They will also be posted in the classroom weekly. This year we are
adding one literary/figurative language term to the list. These are words
that students should be familiar with for SOL testing. The literary terms
will also be included on the weekly test and in the review. Please study the
words with your child weekly and use as many of them in conversation as
possible.

Just as last year, benchmark testing will occur at the end of each six weeks.
Star Reading and Math Assessments will also be given to help teachers gauge
reading and math levels of performance for each student.
During the second semester, our language arts classes will review skills in
preparation for the SOL tests. We will use the Virginia SOL
Prep book and the Virginia SOL Coach book to assist with the review.
Students should also be spending 30 minutes each evening reading. Remember
Read-Up counts for 15% of the total Language Arts grade. Progress reports
will be sent every two weeks during the grading period. Please look on the
progress report for an indication of the number of read-up points earned by
that time. Please see the Read-Up section of this site for additional
information.
