Nottoway Middle School
Physical Education Procedures

Your child has been enrolled in Health and Physical Education class at 
Nottoway Middle School.  He/she will be involved in many different activities 
and sports such as basketball, soccer, handball, football, volleyball, 
softball, badminton, track and field events, ultimate Frisbee, initiative 
games, and recreational games.
I.  Uniforms
	1.  Students must wear proper gym clothes for physical education 
	class.  This includes gym shorts, gym shirts (plain), athletic socks, 
and athletic (tennis) shoes.  They are not to be worn outside of the gym 
class, nor are they to be worn under or over clothing during the school day.  

2.  Students may wear sweat suits or warm-up suits for Physical Education 
during the winter months.  Remember the dress code when choosing athletic 
wear.

3.  Gym uniforms are not to be removed at any time during Physical Education 
class.

4.  Students are not to borrow another student’s gym uniform.

5.  Gym uniforms should be laundered at least weekly.

6.  Students may take showers, but must bring a towel from home to use and 
should let the instructor know at the beginning of class so he/she can bring 
in the class in time to shower.  

7.	Jewelry is NOT to be worn during Physical Education class for safety 
purposes.  This includes watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, dangling or 
hoop earrings, etc.  

II. Grades
Students will be evaluated on the following areas:  Health, Participation, 
and Physical Fitness Testing
	
A.	Health 
Health grades will be averaged weekly based upon:
		Class participation
		Daily assignments
		Homework
		Quizzes and tests
B.	Participation in Physical Education 
		Daily (includes participation, dressing out, attitude, 
effort, etc.)
		Skills Tests
		Written assignments/tests
C.	Physical Fitness Testing
We will  take the State of Virginia Wellness Assessment and Physical Fitness 
Test in Physical Education Class.  The test will include:
			Curl-up (times for 1 minute) – abdominal strength
			Push-ups, pull-ups, or Flexed Arm Hang – upper body
strength
			Sit-n-Reach – flexibility
			Mile run/walk (12 minutes) – cardiovascular endurance
			Shuttle Run – agility
*There will be daily stretches and conditional drills in Physical Education 
class in preparation for wellness/fitness test.

*Students are graded daily in Physical Education based on their level of 
effort and participation, not their ability.  

•	Students will be given 100 points per week.  Points will be deducted 
for non- participation and/or incomplete assignments.
	Dressing out correctly:  proper uniform, shoes, and no jewelry 
	Participation:  warm-up, activity, and cool-down (and any other 
assignments)

III. Excuses and Notes
1.  Any student unable to participate in Physical Education must bring a note 
from a parent or guardian with the reason stated.  A doctor’s note is 
required for an excused period beyond three days.  Repeated parent notes will 
be addressed by an administrator.

2.	Any student unable to participate for an extended period of time will 
be graded on written assignments.  

IV. Locks, Lockers, and Locker Room Regulations
1.  Students are issued lockers at the beginning of the school year.  It then 
becomes the student’s responsibility to take care of his/her locker.  
Students are encouraged to bring a lock from home to secure items in his/her 
locker and let the teacher have the combination or a copy of the key in case 
the student forgets or loses the key/combination.

2.   Lockers are to be kept locked at all times.  This is the responsibility 
of each individual student.  If a student feels his/her lock is being 
tampered with, he/she should report this to the instructors immediately.  The 
security of your possessions is your responsibility.  

3.  There is to be NO sharing of lockers at any time.  The lock combinations 
should NOT be given to classmates, friends, etc.  

4.  Students have five minutes in which to dress for class.  As soon as each 
student is dressed, he/she should report to designated areas for further 
instructions.  

5.  Horseplay, profanity, and excessive noise will not be tolerated in the 
locker room.  

6.  Students are not to go beyond the marked area in the locker room while 
waiting to be dismissed from class.

7.  The shower area is for showering only.  Students must dress in assigned 
areas of the locker room.

8.	NO food or drinks are allowed in the locker room!!

9.	 Lotions, perfumes and other sprays are not permitted in the locker 
rooms due to students with possible respiratory problems.  Such items will be 
confiscated.  A parent or guardian can pick up these items within a week of 
the occurrence for the student.  Please note that after a week these items 
are subject to being discarded due to lack of storage space.  

V.  Valuable Property
1.  Students must LOCK UP all valuables including watches, other jewelry, and 
money in the lockers provided.  The school will NOT be responsible for lost 
items.

2.  Students are to keep hands to themselves and OFF other student’s 
property.  

VI.  ALL INJURIES ARE TO BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY TO THE INSTRUCTORS (BEFORE 
LEAVING CLASS)!!

VII.  STUDENTS ARE NOT TO THROW ROCKS AT ANY TIME DURING PHYSICAL EDUCATION 
CLASS.

to Nurse R. Proffitt (434-292-5375) before your child will be allowed to 
participate.
