Dear Kindergarten families,
Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a great winter break with family and friends. The children did a wonderful job during the “Act of Kindness/Giving” unit especially when they delivered their teddy bears.
Thank you to all the parents who participated in the “Holiday Sharings”. The children love having company and becoming journalists. Soon they will be reporters, photographers, and artists.
We will spend this week wrapping up our December unit with theArt of Acknowledging. Next week, January 19-13, we will be preparing for theWorld Travel unit by making a passport, a window seat for the airplane and learning about the duties that each job assignment entails. Then we are off……
We are traveling to five continents as we create ourWorld Traveler Magazine. We are combining geography, science, foreign language, teamwork, art, literacy and math all into one adventure. Reporters learn how to interview along with taking notes. Photographers learn to use a camera, as well as to find photos from magazines or on the computer that relate to a story. The artists learn to provide illustrations that complement a story. Everyone has the opportunity to do each of these jobs during the course of our travels. We are going to pay our magazine staff both salaries and bonuses, using coins. We will have a pay day at the end of each country visit. All staff receives the same salary of a quarter per week; Reporters- .15¢; Photographers- .10¢; Artists- .05¢; plus the opportunity to make bonuses- .05¢. The bonuses are determined by the amount and appropriateness of the work done. The children’s pay will be kept in the class Bank. After getting paid, we will open up theDuty Free Shop for our shopping pleasure (Fridays). If your child chooses to save their salary, then interest will be rewarded the following payday.
Parents Can Help
Let us know if you or someone you know has been to any of the continents that we will visit and if we can schedule a time/day to share with our class. We are also asking that you send in $5.00 in cash to class (child’s name on envelope) to help us to be able to buy items for the Duty Free Shop as well as foods from the countries by Wednesday the 11th of January. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. Here is our tentative travel schedule:
Jan 16 (Holiday) 17-20 Europe
Jan 23-27 Asia
Jan 30&31st (Teacher Workdays) Feb 1-3 Australia
Feb 6-10 Africa
Feb 13-17 South America (Valentine's Day/100th Day of Kindg.)
