¿Sabías? (did you know?)

There are 20 Spanish speaking countries? How many can you name?

Spain is located in Europe -- on the Iberian Peninsula. It is south of France, with the Pyrenees Mountains (Los Pirineos) separating the two countries. Spain shares the peninsula with Portugal, which lies to the west of Spain.

The Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea -- which include the 4 islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera -- and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic just off the NW coast of Africa, are also part of Spain's territory. Spain also has two territorial cities, Ceuta and Melilla in north Africa, bordering Morocco.

The Rock of Gib raltar, which is at the southern tip of Spain near the African coast, is a territory of Great Britain.

These are the countries of Latin America -- countries

discovered and settled by the Spaniards, beginning with

Columbus's discoveries in 1492. Over the next several hundred years, Spain's wealth and prestige grew until each of the countries fought for and won independence from Spain.

Do you know which territory Columbus first discovered? Is that country a Spanish speaking country now? Do you know which of these countries are not Spanish speaking? (hint, what language do they speak in Brazil and Jamaica?) Notice the unique shapes of some of these countries. What landforms might separate one South American country from another? How many countries are land-locked?
