OVERVIEW of 5th grade:

Religion: The Seven Sacraments, the Mass, the saints, Mary, the Ten
Commandments are our main topics for the year. Usually there will be one
lesson per week with a midweek review page assigned and the quiz on Friday.
Long answer questions are usually given in advance.

Reading: A wide variety of selections in the text will be read with several
days of center activities focusing on vocabulary, comprehension, skills, and
writing. The selection tests are usually open book. Other projects will
include a saint biography with outlining and written activities, literature
circles - several students reading the same book, designing a book jacket
for a Newbery Medal winner, NUMBER THE STARS (with vocabulary, skill, and
comprehension activities), and the Cinderella Project combining picture
books with comparison and contrast writing skills.

Math: Please take a few minutes to look through the Math text. We do cover
most of the topics. Exploring and working with fractions is often the most
challenging section. There is usually a workbook page assigned for every
lesson explored. The quizzes are single topic and are unannounced. Chapter
tests are posted several days in advance. Extra credit is given for doing
Math Superstars. There are many Math "rules": all work in pencil (-5 points
otherwise), any straight lines must be done with a ruler, word problems
require words in the answer( 34 what? -2 points)

English: The main focus is getting a deeper understanding of the parts of
speech and the jobs words do in a sentence, as well as continuing to develop
writing skills. Workbook pages are assigned as topics are discussed. The
Vocabulary book is also a component of the English grade. When a new lesson
is introduced, words are discusse; students are challenged to come up with
related words and hopefully develop a greater understanding of how the parts
of speech may be formed. Sentences are due using each word. Tests are about
every two weeks.

Science: We start off with an Introduction to Science followed by some basic
Chemistry and how matter is classified. This is followed by units on Sound
and Light. Earth Science explores what changes the Earth, both below and
on the surface. In Life Science we spend time on how living things are
classified, plant processes, and the skeletal and muscular systems. We are
usually in the Lab every Wednesday and will also be doing labs/activites in
the classroom. It is a very hands-on year. An outline for each topic is
handed out. The grade is 50% labs (includes worksheets) and 50% tests. Labs
are usually worth up to 5 points (5=100, 4=90, 3=80, etc.). In
class "thinking" points may be awarded for notable particiaption and effort;
these are added to test grades.
