Current events are important to the study of Social Studies. There have been
weeks when issues that we are studying in history are brought up in the
current news cycle. One example is the war in Afghanistan. During our study of
the Revolutionary War in 7th grade, the question could be asked if
the United States could lose the war in Afghanistan, as a superpower, much
like the British lost in 1781, being themselves a superpower ...
You will work on current events as assigned (approximately three a quarter).
You must pick a story from a newspaper, magazine, or online periodical. Each
quarter you will be allowed only one story from either the
international, national, county (local), science, business, sports,
entertainment, or religion sections of your chosen periodical.
Once you have selected, read, and analyzed your article, you will type a
minimum of a one-page summary of the article. Your summary should include the
pertinent information who,
what, where,
why, and when.
Additionally, in analyzing your article, you should state why the article
interested you?, what are the implications?, and how does it affect us? Your
summary must be well-written and absent of any misspellings and grammar
errors. Each misspelling or typographical error will result in the loss of five
points for each mistake.
When typing your summary, you will either type your name at the end of your
summary or in the footer. Moreover, you will use Times New Roman as the style
font and the size of your font is to be 12-point. Additionally, you will
double space when typing your summary and use the default settings for your
margins, which are generally set to 1.25" for the left and right margins and
1" for the top and bottom margins.
Before submitting your summary, you will attach (staple) the article you
selected to your summary.
Every quarter, your current event articles will be averaged and will count as one
test grade for History (tests are 25% of the overall History grade).
