Please note: These are the assignments and test dates projected for the week. They are subject to change based on inclement weather, for instance, or the changing pace of the subjects taught. **The student's assignment pad will usually have the most up-to-date homework.
Please see Announcements Page and email that went home to parents of 4th grade regarding desperate need for parent volunteers to set up the heart in the gym next Mon., May 14th. and run it on May 15th. Please email Me, Mrs. Yenke if you can help.

Generally, students will have a WB page of homework a day.
As with multiplication, we'll extend these basic skills with w.s. on multilpying and dividing even larger numbers. Students must continue to review basic math facts for accuracy and speed to get through these larger problems in a timely fashion. Some are still struggling for both, but most show improvement. Practice makes perfect, as they say. See assignment pad for details.
We'll review math concepts covered in 4th grade.

Science 4B
Respiratory System-test 5/16. Then we'll start the Nervous System.
Science 4A and 4B
Heart Play
The set-up will be the following Monday, May 14th, after school in the gym. No children will be allowed in the gym for safety reasons during construction of the heart and lungs. Students will process through the heart on Tuesday, May 15th, in the afternoon. Parents, I need your help to build the heart, but also to run it on Tuesday.
These are small roles, as "pumpers" of the chambers of the heart, or as a "respiratory or clot-building supervisor." I realize there is so much going on at this time of year, even in just the month of May. I hope I can count on you one more time. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
4A will go through the heart starting at 12:30 til about 1:15 or 1:30 p.m. Then 4B will go through the heart from 1:30-2:15 or 2:30 p.m. or so. After that, volunteers can dismantle the heart structure and put everything back in the box..... all with much thanks from the students and teachers of 4th grade.
I have asked students to bring in regular size skateboards (about 24 inches long?) to class, if they are willing to let us borrow them briefly. They should put their name on masking tape on the board so it can be returned to the proper owner at the end of the day, May 15th. Thanks.

Health 4B
We began a discussion of what good nutrition is. Students are to use their Health printouts and what we talked about in class Friday, to pick a day this weekend to record what they eat, and the amounts in portion size as best they can measure (e.g. ounces, cups, etc.) and list the foods as directed on their menu form. I showed them where to record what info, and we discussed that some foods are "combination foods," such as pizza, which has a crust-part of the grains food group, tomato sauce-part of the vegetable food group, cheese-part of the milk/dairy food group, etc. Students should also strive to meet the goal amounts listed in the Goal column on the sheet. Please see handouts that should have been printed out already from the Links Page on my Teacher Web. Thanks.
Menu sheet due Monday, 4/30.
Social Studies 4B Poster due June 4th. See Mrs. Gadell's TeacherWeb site.Vocabulary
Unit 17 test Tues., 5/15. Then we'll start Unit 18. Col.'s due for the week. See Assign. pad.
The Vocab. link (See Links page) has an excellent review with interactive games illustrations of words, and word maps to help students learn the words for each unit. As a study aid, students may do word search on Photo/Docs page before test.
English
The students are in the process of finishing an original story that they will have the chance to share with their class.
Reading
Skill this week is Author's Purpose. Story is "Chocolate is Missing." Test 5/18.
Free Choice Book Report Guidelines went home today in Take Home folders. I discussed the guidelines with students. They know that the book they read must be a 100 page chapter book. (No Hunger Games, Wimpy Kid or graphic novels, please.) I showed students a sample in class. Poster board was provided for these projects last week.
Students have been told that these projects are to be their own work. Parents may help find supplies for the report, but students are to write, make, and assemble their own report without parent help. Students will have a month to read their book and do the report. They are reminded not to wait until the last minute. Please read over the directions with your students. Also, students should bring their book to school to read if they finish classwork early.
ADDED NOTE: Mrs. Fairbanks talked to the class about taking notes as they read, and passed out a two pg. handout . I have told students to use these and I will collect them with their book report onfor them to use. Each student made out two additional note sheets on looseleaf, that follow the format of the handouts for them to take their notes. The objective is to make it easier for them to collect their thoughts when it is time for them to write their report this Thurs., May 17th.
They will hand them in together for a grade. If they do not hand them in, they will lose points on their grade. Students were told to put these in their Take Home Folders.
MONTHLY READING LOGS: Bring a book to class to read.
I asked students to make or print out a calendar for their new reading log for May. They should read 15 minutes a day and mark it on their calendar and parents please verify and initial that they have read the amount of min. they mark. They can read more, but should read a minimum of 15 minutes a day. If they have practice (sports, dance, music, etc.) one night and don't have time, they can skip that night, but should read twice the amount the next day to make up the difference. I had asked them to read RAZ Kids twice a week, for 15 minutes each. Then they can read their other library books for the balance of the reading for the week. Students should write down the names of books they are reading, and the names of the stories they read on RAZ Kids on their logs. Thanks. This will help your young readers to become better readers, as practice makes perfect. But reading helps build word recognition skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Reading is central to everything your student does in school, including Math. Thank you for your support in this worthwhile effort! ****May reading logs, labeled with student's names, and with total minutes tallied and recorded, will be due, signed by parents Friday, June 1st. Spelling/Words Their Way (WTW)
Word sorts in NB-5/15, C/P - 5/16, 3x ea. in NB - 5/17.
All groups will have their weekly test Friday, 5/18.
Religion
This week we will resume the study of the Rosary with that of the Glorious Mysteries. Students will need to be able to tell about each mystery in detail on the test, as each is worth 20 points. We review these in class, discuss them at length and then act them out in order to help students remember the "who, what, when, where, etc. of each. One way to practice for this test at home is to write out what the student can tell about each at home. They should use their study guide Rosary booklet to do so.
On Tuesday morning, 4B will say the rosary at the grotto with the Sorrowful Mysteries that they are learning this week. (All classes are signing up to take turns saying the rosary in the mornings in May.) All parents are invited to attend if they wish.
Sorrowful Mysteries test is Thurs., 5/17.
Memorare prayer test is 5/24.
