6th Grade Health Schedule:
Jan. 24th – Feb. 24th, 2012 – Mr. Raveia’s Class
Times: 2:15 PM – 3:00PM
Students in sixth grade recognize the dignity and self-worth of the human
person as a child of God. They study the three sides of the health triangle
which include physical, mental/ emotional/ spiritual and social aspects for
total health. Throughout this course, students learn practical information
to foster healthy living for the rest of their lives. If you wish to opt-out

Week 1: Jan 24th – Jan. 27th
Tues: Introduction to 6th Grade Health……
Health Triangle – Three Parts to Health – Physical, Social,
Mental/Emotional/Spiritual
Wed: 6.2 Food Plate
Reviewing standards and identifying deficiencies in diet: Identifying ways
to improve the student’s diet; Discuss issues related to body image and weight
Homework: Thur – Bring in 2 food labels of foods frequently eaten at home.
Friday – Use the paper plate and record the foods eaten over a 2 day period
(Thur and Fri) – Write a goal to improve your nutrition and exercise.
Thur: 6.2 Reading Food Labels
How to read a food label; Compare food labels to make healthier choices

Fri: Professional Development Day – No School
Week 2: Jan. 31 – Feb. 3
Tues: 6.2 Six Major Nutrients
What are the six major nutrients? Students will make a “Nutrient Flip
Chart” in class reflecting the six major nutrients and how the body uses them.

6.5 The student will demonstrate injury prevention and management skills to
promote personal and family health. Weather and seasonal safety will be
presented and discussed.
Activity: Students will create a list of recommended emergency supplies for
emergency preparedness at home.
Thur: Nutrition Test
Fri: 6.2 Target Heart Rate
We will calculate our resting and exercise target heart rate – Bring sneakers
to class, jackets/sweatshirt, bottled water as part of this class will be
outside.
“The Changing Body Presentation Forms” will be sent home for permission to
attend this health class (scheduled the last week of Health). If the student
does not have permission to attend, they will be sent out of the room with
Mr. Raveia.
Week 3: Feb. 7th – Feb. 10th
Tues: 6.1 & 6.2 Communicable vs. Non-communicable Diseases
What are communicable vs. non-communicable diseases; Viruses vs. Bacterial
infection handout; How germs are spread, i.e., direct and indirect contact;
Universal/Standard Precautions; Proper hand washing techniques; Proper
hygiene; Importance of sleep; Importance of Immunizations
Wed: 6.4 & 6.5 Students will learn consequences of personal
choices/wellbeing – A “How Do We Know if Something is Risky” Worksheet will
be completed and discussed in class. This worksheet takes everyday
situations and students evaluate the risk associated with the activity,
predict the consequences, choose appropriate measures to take and evaluate
choices for future decisions, i.e., skating without kneepads, riding a bike
without a helmet, etc… Strategies for avoiding accidents, using protective
gear, avoiding weapons/weapon safety.
Thur: 6.4 & 6.5 First Aid Presentation/Clinic
Responding to injuries: Topics are varied from abrasions, nose bleeds, 911 &
Poison Control calls, seizures, choking, etc…..Heimlich maneuver.
Fri: 6.1 & 6.4 Students will analyze the consequences of personal choices on
health and well-being – Students will complete their own “Personal Inventory”
worksheet. This worksheet has the student look at their likes, dislikes,
strengths, weaknesses, introvert/extrovert personality types. Self esteem
and self-image will be discussed.
• Connection between self-image & personal success..avoiding drugs,
gangs, weapons and drugs – Serious consequences; Environmental influences on
personal health; Refusal strategies
• Importance of accepting personal responsibility r/t actions
• Identifications of risky behaviors, i.e., body piercing, tattoos,
plastic surgery, etc… with emphasis on not trendy fashions but the beauty and
perfection that God has granted each of us …”Why mess with perfection?” This
may be the most controversial class as students sometimes bring-up risky
behaviors that are not mentioned in the presentation. If a different topic
surfaces, parents will be e-mailed so that they can address at home.

Week 4: Feb. 14th - Feb. 17th Mrs. Mangas, guest speaker for the following
topics:
Tues: In His/Her Shoes - Teaches compassion, empathy and considering others
(it is not always about you). Examples, of “people who are outside of the
norm”, who are successful now. Teaches that you cannot judge people by their
appearance. Various situations will be “reframed” and looked at from
different perspectives.
Wed: Media – Commercials, magazines and cereal boxes will be examined.
Empowering students to see behind the cartoon, beautiful girl, etc… Look at
what they are selling and why they are making us feel less than or not as
good about ourselves. (Societal expectations vs. God’s expectations will be
included.)
Thur: Boys Class – Bullying, bystander and friend – What is the definition
of a good friend? Students will be asked “if they are a good friend”. Role
playing and gossiping will be addressed. “Will this help or hurt someone if
I repeat gossip?” If it will hurt the person, don’t say or do it! (Girls
will be with Mrs. Caracciolo elsewhere during this class….outside if nice,
study hall if not nice outside.)
Fri: Girls Class – Friendship – What is the definition of a good friend?
Activity: “Cross the line” exercise, i.e., if you’ve ever felt like you were
left out, cross the line. Girls focus more on outside vs. inside beauty.
This is the age when those free spirits start to close off and worry about
being cool. (Boys will be with Mrs. Caracciolo elsewhere during this
class….outside if nice, study hall if not nice outside.)
Week 5: Feb. 21st – Feb. 24th
Tues: 6.3 & 6.4 The student will describe the connections between mental,
emotional, social and physical development r/t adolescence.
Stress – What it is and what it does to your body. Activity – A stressful
event is described and students are asked to take and record their pulse. A
calming event is described and students are asked to take and record their
pulse. Discussion is held regarding the effects of stress on the body.
• Stress management techniques will be presented – Prayer, talking with
your parents or trusted friend, deep breathing, muscle relaxation, visioning
a calm, happy event, journaling, exercise, etc..
• Respecting individual differences
• Responding to positive and negative criticism – Constructive
criticism can help you!
• Symptoms of depression – What you can do to help yourself or others
if in this position, i.e., prayer, sharing with a trusted adult, seeing a
doctor, etc..
Wed: Wed.: 6.6 The student will access and analyze information for the
purpose of improving personal and family health.
• Power point presentation about advertising & media resources. “Smart
consumer choice” and internet safety
• Medication safety - Prescription vs. over-the-counter medications
• Presentation of different types of health specialties, agencies and
organizations
• Reliable health information websites
Thur.: 6.3 Girls “Changing Body Presentation” and hygiene -- Consent form
