Classroom Economy

Here's our 2nd grade Classroom Economy from 2006-2007!
Stay tuned for Kindergarten!!

As we started building our Classroom Community in Room 25,
we also began developing a Classroom Economy.

The first step in creating our Classroom Economy was deciding on what jobs would be needed to effectively run our classroom. We voted on these jobs and ranked them in order of difficulty (deciding that the more difficult jobs deserved a higher paycheck each week). Listed below are our classroom occupations and their respective weekly salaries.

Eagle of the Week
$20.00 / week
Probably the most sought after job is the Eagle of the Week!  The Eagle of the Week is the line leader for the week. He / she also has all the responsibilities of being an Eagle (including making a poster, bringing a favorite book, the mystery box, lunch buddy, and eagle's nest). Each morning, the Eagle also selects the 3 "couch potatoes," or students who can sit on the couch for the day, from the top hat.

Banker
$19.00 / week
The Banker has the huge responsibility of running the Stamp Savings and Loan. He / she selects a teller to assist during bank hours. The banker accepts paychecks that have been signed for payment, stamps the checks PAID, and counts out the correct amount of money. He / she also collects rent checks.

Game Show Host
$10.00 / week
The Game Show Host is responsible for announcing our weekly Homeworkopoly Game! He / she hands out any prizes awarded to contestants.

Cashier
$14.00 / week
The Cashier assists customers at the Stamp General Store. The Cashier also checks receipts, accepts payments, counts change, and bags merchandise.

Custodian
$18.00 / week
The Custodian empties table trash cans at the end of every school day. He / she also puts classroom trash cans in the hallway at dismissal.

Postal Worker
$8.00 / week
The Postal Worker checks the classroom mailbox each afternoon for mail deliveries. He / she delivers the mail and any school notices to student mailboxes.

Photographer (2)
$17.00 / week
The Photographers use the class digital cameras to document class happenings. They are also responsible for taking a picture of the Eagle of the Week.

Newspaper Reporter (2)
$15.00 / week
The Newspaper Reporters write articles for the class newspaper, "Live in Room 25!" They also interview the Eagle of the Week.

Calendar Specialist
$6.00 / week
The Calendar Specialist updates the wall calendar each day. He / she also ensures the class has added the correct date and number of school days to their Math Notebooks.

Meteorologist
$6.00 / week
The Meteorologist observes the weather conditions out our classroom window. He / she also checks WeatherBug on the computer for the high and low temperature, which the class records in their Weather Journals.

 Patrol Officer
$15.00 / week
The Patrol Officer ensures all jobs are completed at the end of the school day. He / she reminds students of their duties, if necessary.

Equipment Manager
$7.00 / week
The Equipment Manager carries the tub of playground equipment outside at recess.
He / she also checks to make sure all equipment is returned to the tub at the completion of recess.

Chalkboard Inspector
$5.00 / week
The Chalkboard Inspector erases the chalkboard at the end of the school day. He / she also makes sure that all chalk is put away in the chalk basket.

Librarian
$3.00 / week
The Librarian carries the tub of returned books to the Library each morning after announcements. He / she also checks the classroom book shelves to ensure that all books are put away neatly.

Head Table Washer
$9.00 / week
The Head Table Washer washes our tables in the cafeteria each day after Lunch. He / she selects an Assistant to help with this job.

Hand Sanitizer
$4.00 / week
The Hand Sanitizer gives each child one squirt of sanitizer to clean their hands before Lunch.

Pencil Sharpener
$13.00 / week
The Pencil Sharpener sharpens all class pencils at the end of the school day. Since our sharpeners are nocturnal, this is the only time when they are "awake!"

Caboose
$2.00 / week
The Caboose is the last person in our line. He / she turns off the light, closes the door, and changes our "Where is Mrs. Stamp's Class?" sign.

Messenger
$13.00 / week
The Messenger selects an Assistant to help with deliveries. He / she counts the lunch orders and takes it to the cafeteria. The Messenger also takes any notes to the office in the orange envelope.

Substitute
$2.00 / week
When a student is absent, the Substitute completes their job.

After students complete their weekly job assignment, they receive their paycheck.
Fridays are paydays! Students cash their paychecks at the Stamp Savings and Loan
(our class bank) during bank hours (usually, Friday afternoons).

Receiving paychecks is a "real world" experience that the students REALLY enjoy!

The Stamp Savings and Loan was built (by
students) using a "science board" and
individually colored bricks.

Students keep their money in a "wallet" for safe keeping. All earnings and deductions
are recorded in the students' bank books. In addition to their weekly paycheck,
they can also earn "bonus bucks" for demonstrating Quality Student behavior
(students can also lose money when behaving inappropriately).

Student wallets are laminated envelopes with a velcro closure.  Our bank books were created from a folded piece of card stock.

Students are responsible for writing down earnings and deductions in their bank books. (A special thank you to BB&T Bank for donating a class set of check registers!!)

The students began the school year with a book of 20 checks. Each week they write a rent check for rental of their desk and chair (only $1.00/week--quite a bargain!). Additional checks can be purchased from the bank.

Students may choose to spend their hard earned money and visit the Stamp General Store. Of course, they can also make an economic choice to save their money instead.

The Stamp General Store offers bargains every other week for eager shoppers! The incredible selection at our store is due to the generosity of our AMAZING class parents!!!  Thank you!

After making their choices, students fill out their own "receipt". Here they indicate the items purchased, quantity, and price. They calculate the total price and bring the receipt and their items to the cashier for check out.

I have adapted many ideas to create our Classroom Economy,
including ideas from wonderful teachers like Mrs. Newingham and Mrs. Madden. Thank you!
