Mrs. Wilson’s Sixth Grade Homework Policy 2009-2010
Purpose:
The purpose of DAILY homework is to help students develop good study habits, foster positive attitudes toward school, and communicate to students the idea that learning continues at home after school.
Parent involvement:
This should be kept to a MINIMUM. This doesn’t mean that you should never sit down with your child, but don’t do the work for them. Ask what they have learned and let them challenge you with a problem. Encourage, motivate, and check over the work to make sure it is complete. Help your child establish a quiet, organized place away from distractions and set a consistent time each day for completing homework.
Student Involvement:
At the end of each day the students will fill out their planners with all of the assigned work, as well as the expected due dates. This information should be shared with someone at home. I will expect a parent signature in the planner each day for the month of September. I will check these once a week on Monday.
Work Completion:
If your child gets frustrated, can’t solve a problem, or it gets too late, STOP!!! The purpose of homework is NOT to overwhelm, intimidate, or further frustrate your child. There will be daily peer help and study hall opportunities for them to complete any unfinished work.
Absences:
If your child is absent from school for any length of time, they have as many days as they were gone to make up the missed assignments. If they are absent on Tuesday but received Monday night’s assignments, they will be expected to turn this homework in on the next school day. On the board, there will be a weekly updated list of homework. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of missing work after any absences. If during the year you will be taking your child out of school for a prolonged period of time, please give me at least one week to gather any work they might miss.
Additional Homework Guidelines:
· No name papers will be kept for one week and then recycled if they are not retrieved
· Students will turn in work that is neatly done, to the best of their ability
· Students will be asked to re-do any sloppy assignments
·
NO EXCUSES:
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to finish an assignment, the parent/guardian may send a note on the day the homework is due stating the reason why it was not complete. This does not count for long-term projects. I will not allow a phone call home for this. However, they are expected to complete the assignment as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wilson
