Emergency Preparedness

At Evergreen we prepare for emergencies such as fire, earthquake, and
lockdowns. The following are a few of the many ways that we prepare for such
incidents:

• Staff and students practice fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills
regularly.

• Each classroom has an emergency kit that the teachers will take with them
in the event that we evacuate the building. The purpose of this kit is to
provide for the needs of students for a short evacuation.

• The staff is trained in emergency procedures.

• We practice our emergency procedures on a routine basis.

• The school is equipped with an emergency radio system for communication.
In an emergency, a command post is established in Lakewood with a radio link
to us. This command post will monitor our status and coordinate any
emergency assistance needed.

Most frequently asked questions:

Can I call the school during an emergency?

If we have phone service, it would be very important that phone lines are
available for outgoing calls. Therefore, we would discourage incoming calls.

Would students be sent home early?

The primary concern in any emergency is the welfare of the children. In many
cases, children are safer at school than at home immediately after an
emergency because the school doesn’t know:

• The walking conditions
• Conditions at home
• If anyone is home to receive the children.

It is vital that parents ensure that a current emergency phone number is on
file in the school office. Children will only be released to a parent or the
person(s) listed on the pink emergency card in our main office.

Can I pick up my child at school?

YES! Children are signed out through the main office if students are inside
the building. If staff and students are outside, the following procedure has
been established to ensure the safety of your children:

• The parent/student reunion team will greet you at the gate which is across
from the utility road on the playground.

• Provide the team with the name of the student(s) you are checking out, and
they will send a runner to that classroom(s) to get them.

• Student accountability requires that a staff person check each student
out. Please do not go directly to the class. Student emergency cards will be
checked to confirm that the adult is authorized to take the student.

• Be prepared to show identification
