Principal's Message

I am so proud of Harrison Prep students as they have completed another year’s worth of Community Service Days. Students and teachers started their work in the fall, and worked on their plans during some half-days throughout the year. Community Service is an important component of the IB curriculum, and something that HP has deemed important from the very beginning. We started with Week Without Walls, a week in June that saw students involved for a week outside the building, in the community.

As the school grew, we changed to a program of service throughout the year. This year all the planning was student-based for selection, planning, and programming. Groups have full days in February, March, April and May.

This year’s groups performed services around the district and community that included
• Puget Creek Salmon Restoration
• American Lake Park and Lakewold Gardens cleanup
• Relay for Life participation
• Book collection and donation to local elementary schools
• Mentoring and tutoring in elementary schools
• Collecting and delivering donations and working at L'Arche Tahoma
• Volunteering for Operation Homefront
• Developing an anti-bullying assembly and presenting to an elementary school

All the CSD groups will present their work at an all-school assembly on Friday, June 8, 2012. If you would like to come, watch the website for the exact time.

Expect to see a paper copy of this survey coming in the next week or so. Please return it to your student's advisory teacher as soon as you complete it in order to win in a competition to see who can turn in the most surveys in the least amount of time. More details to come!

Facebook, MySpace and Students
Facebook - Safety for Parents
Harrison Prep wants to remind parents to monitor their children's use of online social media such as Facebook and Myspace. Online issues between students can follow them into the classroom. While HP deals with issues that follow students into the classroom, we cannot police every child's online interactions at home. Many of the issues we are seeing involve children that are younger than the Age Restrictions permitted on these websites. Please monitor your child's internet use, and be aware of what they are doing online. Additional tips are located on the attached webpage from Facebook.
