Things to know from today's class:
CHECK the BACKPACK- there is a lot for you in there. 
Today went by so fast!  We started off with a math assessment to see what your child knows about 
multiplication.  We'll use the data from the assessment to put your child in a math group that 
fits his or her needs.  4th graders will be working lots on multiplication in the next few 
months and it is ESSENTIAL that they know their basic multiplication facts by heart ASAP.  5th 
graders will be reviewing multiplication quickly and moving on to division very soon.  5th 
graers will have a MUCH easier time learning new concepts if they know their multiplication and 
division facts through 12s by heart ASAP.  I'm sending home flashcards for you TONIGHT for 
multiplication facts!!! Please be sure to show your child the importance of learning the facts 
by SCHEDULING time for studying them.  USE the flashcards I'm sending home tonight.  This and 
NIGHTLY SCHEDULED TIME for your child to read aloud to you are probably the two most absolutely 
critical things you can do now to help your child succeed this year.  Let's face it, if we don't 
deliberately schedule things into our evenings they aren't going to happen!  Please commit to 
nightly flashcards and read aloud time with your child.  Research continually supports the idea 
that reading aloud if the NUMBER ONE way to increase reading skills in school aged children.  
Plus, it's really a great way to bond with your child.  
After math we did some reading and some community building time today then it was already the 
end of the day!

You're all SO lucky to have these awesome kiddos as your own.  They are all fabulous people and 
I'm really enjoying getting to know each child.  I'm so excited for this year and I really hope 
your child is coming home with good things to report about school.  
If your child has not brought in all suplies yet, please send them by Monday.  Pillow cases 
should be here by next Friday.

HOMEWORK:
-Read aloud for 20 minutes and get parent signature in planner
- Decorate t-shirt with your 12 things from the summer 
- study facts
- help parents sign up for nightly emails from Mrs. G

9/4/08	Assembly: Payback Books Fundraiser and Reflections Art Contest in the Gym at 9:15 AM
9/18/08 Watershed Field Trip!  Kids need a bag lunch. Free trip! We're expecting a parent from 
the Clow, Shuler, and Demmon families to join us at 9:10 in the classroom.  Thanks for 
volunteering!  We'll be back by 2:00.  Don't forget a lunch!

9/25/08 Curriculum Night for YOU!!  VERY important-please come! 5:30-6:30

Something very cool to do as a family:
9/20/2008 9:00 AM: Volunteer:Forest Park Day of Stewardship  Free The Forest Park Conservancy's 
Day of Stewardship celebrates Forest Park and its impressive 70 mile trail system. Day of 
Stewardship work will focus on trail projects and removal of non-native invasive species. 
The day starts with food and coffee from Food Front Co-Op, Grand Central Bakery and Stumptown 
Coffee. A volunteer appreciation party ends the day and all volunteers receive an REI "Get 
Dirty" t-shirt.

A NOTE ABOUT SUPPLIES:
This is a very special class.  Not only do we have two grade levels and lots of diversity in age 
and learning levels, we have the advantage of having a self contained class all day every day.  
What that means is that we have the chance to do things that other classes don't necessarily 
do.  We go on more field trips, we do special art projects, etc.  Because of that we do need a 
few more supplies.  Here are some things that are additions to some of the supply lists and are 
very necessary:
- a white pillow case (new or used) by next Friday
- a USB thumb drive (min. 1 gig)
- 4 composition books (NOT spirals)
**If your family is not able to come up with any supplies please contact me personally**
