is no supervision until that time. Afternoon kindergarten students are not
to arrive at school prior to 11:50 a.m. For safety reasons, please pick up
and drop off your child outside the building, not at the classroom. Students
exit the building in the front or the south side door by the busses. At the
end of the school day, upon dismissal, students are to leave the building and
grounds immediately, unless other arrangements have been made.
SCHOOL BREAKFAST/LUNCH PROGRAM:
The district’s food service program provides a nutritious breakfast and lunch
for students. Breakfast is provided free for all students and will be served
promptly at 7:45 a.m. Application forms are to be filled out by all parents
who wish their children to be considered for free or reduced price meals.
Those applications should be returned within the first few days of school.
We will notify you of your child’s qualification status. If a parent will be
joining their child for lunch, please give the school kitchen and the
classroom teacher prior notification.

ATTENDANCE
ADMISSION/ENROLLMENT
Children who will be five years old on or before August 31 are eligible to
attend kindergarten. The child’s birth certificate and immunization records
are required for enrollment. Registration after the start of the school year
will take place at the school office, during regular business hours. Upon
completion of the registration packet, and prior to admission, the secretary
will review the information and may request additional information or
clarification. Please make it known if your child has a current IEP or
receives any special services. If your child has medical issues, the school
health clerk must be consulted prior to admission. Providing all requested
information is current and accurate, placement procedures can usually be
completed in one day, allowing the student to start classes the following day
after enrollment. Failure to provide accurate information may result in your
child not being admitted into school or exclusion from the school until all
necessary information is provided.
TARDY STUDENTS:
Students and families at Lakeview realize that the opening minutes of class
are as important as any other time during the course of the school day. If a
student is not in the assigned classroom when the tardy bell rings at 8:00
a.m., the student is considered tardy. The student must then report to the
school office for a tardy slip before entering the classroom. If the
tardiness is unexcused, the teacher may require the student make up the lost
time or the missed work.
STUDENT ABSENCES:
Parents have a legal and moral responsibility to see that their children are
in school every day. State Law requires that children attend school. By
setting a high standard for attendance in school, we are setting the same
expectation for the student’s entrance into the world of work.
When it is necessary for your child to be absent or tardy, please call the
school office at 583-5321 prior to 8:00 a.m. to inform us of the absence or
tardiness, indicating the reason. Washington State law and Clover Park
School District policy requires communication be made to the homes of
students that are absent or tardy. It is also necessary to provide the
school with a written note explaining your child’s absence or informing the
office of any changes in normal procedures.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:
Unexcused absences for student will be handled as follow:
1st absence ……………………….phone call home
2nd absence ………………………letter home from school office
5 absences in one month ……….referral to County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
10 absences in one year ………..referral to County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
BECCA VIOLATIONS:
In accordance with the State’s mandatory “BECCA” attendance laws and district
attendance policies, if a student is absent without legitimate excuse for one-
third of the student’s educational program day on five (5) or more occasions
in a calendar month and/or ten (10) in a year, the school district may file a
petition with the juvenile court seeking the court’s jurisdiction over the
student’s attendance in school. Any parent found to have violated the law
may be fined up to $25.00 per day of unexcused absence and the student will
be ordered to attend school. The court may also order the parent and/or
guardian to provide community service at the student’s school in lieu of
imposing a fine. A student who fails to comply with a court order to attend
school may be found in contempt of court and may be placed in juvenile
detention or receive alternative sentencing from the court.
EARLY RELEASE:
Requests for early dismissal are a disruption to the entire classroom, and
should be avoided as much as possible. If a child needs to be released from
school for a medical/dental appointment or other emergency, a parent/guardian
or designated adults that is listed on the enrollment card must come to the
school office and sign the child out of school. No child will be released by
the teacher to a parent/guardian without following this procedure.
WITHDRAWING YOUR STUDENT:
Families sometimes find it necessary to move during the school year. It is
very important to let the school know if you are planning a move.
Withdrawing from the school requires return of school materials such as text
books and library books, payment of any book fines, and closure of lunch
account. Lakeview will forward student records when you have registered in
your new school. Your may request copies of your child’s report cards, etc.
Please give the office at least 3 business days to complete your request.
PARENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The relationship between the family, community and the school is one of the
most important factors of a child’s success in school. It is very important
that we as the staff at Lakeview Elementary School express our hope that all
of our families feel welcome in our building. We are here to serve the
educational needs of your child. We offer the following ways to develop a
relationship with us and to learn more about our school.
VISITORS:
Visitors are welcome at Lakeview Elementary School. For safety and interest
of our instructional program, all visitors must check in at the office.
Classroom observations are available by appointment only. Please schedule
these observations through our principal. Often there are schedules and
testing situations to take into consideration. It is important to call ahead
so that the best circumstances can be met for your visit.
VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers play a vital role at Lakeview. There is no finer way to enhance
and strengthen our public schools than to have parents, teachers, staff and
community members working together for the betterment of our students. We
welcome your participation, whether it is at home or in your child’s
classroom. Anyone wanting to volunteer at school or on a field trip must
complete a Washington State Patrol Volunteer Interview Form, please see the
school counselor to obtain this paperwork. Once these forms have been
processed and approved the approval is valid for two years. Volunteer
possibilities are endless! Make a difference ….. VOLUNTEER!
PTA:
Lakeview is looking forward to establishing an active PTA. We look forward
to new membership beginning with our barbeque in September.
NEWSLETTER:
Once a month we send home a monthly newsletter from our office with our
students. The Leopard News is always printed on a bright sheet of paper!
Please take the time to read this material; it contains information about the
school, individual classrooms, and any necessary updates.
SITE COUNCIL:
Lakeview welcomes parents to join our site council. The site council meets
once per month to discuss the academic standards of our children. This
committee makes recommendations regarding academic standards and practices.
OFFICE TELEPHONE:
The office telephone is not for the use of children. Children should use the
classroom telephones in case of an emergency.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
UP-TO-DATE EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
We must be able to reach you in case of an emergency. It is extremely
important that you provide us with updated home and work phone numbers and
addresses as needed throughout the school year by notifying the school
office. Up-to-date emergency telephone numbers of a friend or relative and
your family doctor are very important for us to have in the event you cannot
be reached in an emergency. If there ever is a problem, your child will
appreciate you having taken care of this sooner rather than later. If there
is an emergency and you cannot be contacted, a school staff member will act
as a substitute parent and get help for your child.
HEALTH ROOM
ILLNESS:
Please do not send your children to school when they have sore throats,
fevers, severe colds and are coughing. Children should stay home when they
do not feel well. This is not only for your child’s welfare, but also for
the welfare of every other child in the classroom. Students show are well
enough to attend school must be able to participate fully in the normal
school day, including recess and outdoor activities. We encourage students
to come to school prepared for any weather during recess. Our school health
clerk works hard to make sure children are as healthy as possible. If your
child should become ill during the school day, you will be contacted to come
and take your child home.
STUDENT IMMUNIZATIONS:
Washington State Law (RCW 28a.31 and WAC 248-100-163) requires that children
enrolled in grades K-12 be fully immunized. When you enroll your child in
school, please remember to bring proof that your child has been given the
proper immunizations.
HEALTH SCREENING:
Each fall parents are requested to fill out forms which give information of
any student health concerns. Please keep the school informed of any change
in your child’s health status and activity restriction. Vision, hearing, and
dental screenings are done once per year. Screening for scoliosis is done in
fifth grade. Parents are notified if a follow-up is needed. These are
screening services only and do not take place of regular examinations
performed by your eye specialist, dentist or family physician.
HEAD LICE “NO NIT” POLICY:
At Lakeview we maintain a “no nit” policy in an effort to control the spread
of lice among classmates. When lice are detected at school, the following
procedures will be followed:
1. Parent/guardian will be notified
2. The child will be sent home
3. The parent/guardian will be provided with instruction for treatment
4. Removal of ALL nits shall be a prerequisite for returning to school.
School health personnel will examine the student.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL:
Clover Park School District policy and Washington State Administrative Codes
require that any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) be
administered under strict guidelines. The school office, as well as each
doctor’s office, has the required form for a child to take medication at
school. This form requires the doctor’s instruction and signature, as well
as the written permission of the parents/guardian. All medication must be in
the prescription bottle or original container and will be kept in a locked
cabinet in the office. An adult in charge will give medication and a record
log kept of each dosage.
SAFETY
SCHOOL SUPERVISION:
Supervision is limited before and after school. Lakeview does not provide
childcare before or after school. We ask that you adhere to the 7:45 arrival
time for your child. We ask that you have your child gauge his/her time so
that arrival is not more than ten minutes before school starts and that
going “straight home” or to the Boys and Girls Club after school becomes a
daily routine. We do not allow children on the school premises after school
unless previously arranged between the teacher and the parent. If your
child’s normal routine will not be followed, please send a note to the school
notifying us of the change for that day.
SKATES, SKATEBOARDS AND IN-LINE SKATES:
Students are prohibited from riding or being in possession of skates,
skateboards, and in-line skates at school or school activities. These items
can be disruptive, can present a safety hazard and will be confiscated.
Students are subject to school discipline if they bring these items to school.
STREETS AND SAFETY PATROL:
Safety patrol students escort Lakeview students to appropriate buses after
school and meet students at morning bus drop off . Please help us by
teaching your child to follow our bus expectations.
When picking up or dropping off your child, please do not drive into the bus-
loading zone even when there are no busses. A sign is posted as a reminder.
Please ask your children to cross streets only at designated crosswalks or at
the corners of the blocks. Parents should remember not to double park as you
drop off or pick up your children. Please do not park across the street from
the school as it is unsafe for children and it is private property.
BUS REGULATIONS:
Bus riders are required to ride the bus home unless they bring a note from
home. All school rules and regulations apply to bus conduct. School bus
drivers have the authority to discipline students for misconduct related to
School District Rules. Misconduct may result in suspension of the bus riding
privileges. The Students Responsibilities and Rights Policy will be applied
at school, at school bus stops, away from school, at school events, functions
or activities and for transportation on school vehicles. School discipline
may also be applied.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
During Emergencies, the school district advises the following:
• Please do not call the school. The phone lines must be clear for
school to notify parents or call emergency services, etc.
• Please do not come to the school unless requested. Each student must
be accounted for. Staff has been instructed on the care of students during
an emergency.
• We will notify you if your child has been injured.
• If children are removed from the school, we will contact you. Please
have your emergency phone numbers up-to-date in our office
• Water and simple food may be provided to students until families
arrive to pick up their child/children.
EMERGENCY DRILLS:
Emergency drills are to be taken seriously. Students are expected to
maintain classroom conduct throughout the entire drill and to become informed
of the exit route for each of their classrooms.

All families are encouraged to plan for child care and emergency
transportation in case of bad weather, hazardous road conditions or other
emergencies that might close schools or alter school hours or bus schedules
and routes. Local radio and TV stations will broadcast school closures and

THEFT:
Any student involved in a theft may be disciplined and/or suspended. The
student will be required to replace or pay for the stolen item(s). Proper
legal authorities may be contacted.
DRUGS:
Tobacco, alcohol, and drugs are not allowed on school grounds at anytime by
students or parents. This includes before and after school hours.
Medications at school are only permissible when approved by a physician and
the school is in possession of a medical release form. Suspension from
school will result from any infraction of these rules.
TRESPASS:
A charge of trespass, with notice to police authorities, may be given to any
person who 1)creates a disturbance on school property, 2)whose continued or
recurring presence may result in a real and substantial disruption to the
school environment, or 3) who poses a threat to the safety and well being of
property or person. Students on campus while on suspension and/or expulsion
are subject to additional disciplinary action and arrest for criminal
trespass.
WEAPONS:
Any weapon, including guns, sling shots, knives, or toys which look like
those weapons, are not allowed on school district property at any time.
Students who have them in their possession shall be disciplined in accordance
with district policy, which could include expulsion.
TOYS/PERSONAL ITEMS/VALUABLES AT SCHOOL:
Toys, large sums of money and other valuable items should be left at home.
Articles of value for class display should be locked in a teacher’s cabinet
or checked in at the office. Radios, tape recorders, cameras, laser
pointers, cellular phones and other distracting items are not to be brought
to school.
DRESS AND APPEARANCE:
Dress and appearance must not present health or safety problems or cause
disruption. Students are expected to come to school or school activities
well groomed and appropriately dressed. All students must wear shoes that
are appropriate for physical activity. Clothing must be seasonally
appropriate. Students who do not meet these standards will be asked to return
home to correct the problem. Clothing that carries a sexual, vulgar or
offensive message or references the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or gang
affiliation will not be permitted. It is understood that individual
teachers, in consultation with the school administrator, may restrict
appearance and attire with special consideration for safety and health
issues. Due to the high distractibility perfumes and make-up should not be
worn to school. The administration has the authority to make changes at any
time to the above dress code based on either safety or health reasons.
HEADGEAR:
Headgear must not be worn in the building. This includes hats, hoods,
sweatbands, sunglasses, visors, scarves, and bandannas. The exception to
this is for school sanctioned events such as “Crazy Hats” day, religious
practice or medical conditions.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS
GENERAL RULES OF BEHAVIOR:
The Lakeview Staff believes all students can behave appropriately at school.
Our emphasis is to help students learn to solve problems in a constructive
manner. Any behavior or action which helps someone grow and mature will be
encouraged. Lakeview’s general rules of behavior are:
CODE OF HONOR
• Be Safe
• Be Respectful
• Be Responsible
• Be Kind
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. Arrive on time and enter and leave the building in an orderly manner
2. Respect adults and each other
3. Cooperate with others
4. Stay on task
5. Be responsible for the choices you make
6. Settle disagreements
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:
Classroom teachers are responsible for developing the rules for their
classroom, provided they are consistent with state law and the Clover Park
School District Policy.
Good positive behavior will be encouraged and recognized. Behavior or
actions that interfere with someone’s growth will not be allowed.
We recognize that children do misbehave from time to time. When rules are
broken and it becomes necessary to correct a student’s behavior, we will
attempt to administer discipline in a prompt, consistent manner. Whenever
possible, logical consequences will be given. For example, a student writing
on school walls will be expected to clean the writing from the walls, etc…
CARING SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Lakeview is implementing a new program entitled Caring School Community.
This program is designed to build respectful relationships between staff,
students and families, give students the opportunity to collaborate with one
another, allow students the opportunity to make decisions about the classroom
community and emphasize the importance of learning and having high
standards. Students will participate in class meetings, whole school
activities, cross-age buddy activities, and activities to do with family
members at home.
DUE PROCESS:
Students will be expected to follow the laws of the state and rules of the
district. Students at school and students at school-sponsored, off-campus
events shall be governed by school district rules and regulations and are
subject to the authority of the school officials.
REFERRALS TO THE PRINCIPAL:
Students are sent directly to the principal for the following physically
dangerous and disrespectful situations: flagrant disrespect of adults;
assault/fighting, threatening others with physical harm, throwing rocks,
bringing or using weapons at school, using narcotics, alcohol or unauthorized
drugs, leaving school grounds without permission, vandalizing school or
private property or any form of sexual harassment.
All staff use a DISCIPLINE REFERRAL form, which is a formal document,
maintained by the principal. It includes a list of specific behavior
violations and is used to clarify inappropriate behavior to the student and
to communicate the behavior to the parents. All supervising adults have
access to Discipline Referrals. When a violation occurs, the Discipline
Referral will be explained to the students, filled out, and signed by the
supervising adults, unless the student is sent to the principal. If the
referral is signed by the principal, the violation is considered serious and
the PRINCIPAL’S PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES will be applied.
The following is an explanation of the progressive steps taken by the
principal in the event of a student being referred to the office:
• Loss of privileges/call home
• In-school suspensions and a parent conference required
• Short-term suspension – sent home for rest of the day (up to 5 days).
• Longer suspension from school and/or transfer.
The above may be adjusted according to individual situations.
ASSEMBLIES:
School assemblies are an important feature of a student’s education.
Students are to give their undivided attention to the Master of Ceremonies or
any speaker or performer at the beginning and throughout the assembly.
Students are expected to show appreciation by their attention and applause.
Inappropriate behavior that results in a student being removed from an
assembly will result in disciplinary action and/or possible exclusion from
future assemblies.
LOST AND FOUND:
Each year students may lose many articles including clothing items and lunch
boxes. Please mark your child’s belongings clearly and visibly with your
child’s name. Lakeview maintains a Lost and Found in the front foyer and
small articles such as glasses in the office. Parents and students are
encouraged to check periodically for lost items.
HOMEWORK:
The staff at Lakeview Elementary supports the belief that the assignment of
homework promotes academic success and study skills competencies. Homework is
an integral part of the learning process and presents opportunities for
practice in those skills or concepts already taught.
INTERNET/TECHNOLOGY:
All classrooms at Lakeview have internet access. Although there are
safeguards placed on our computers by the school district, there is still an
expectation that students will use the internet in a safe and responsible
manner.
Students may not bring any computer applications, including games, to school
for any reason. District provided workstations may not be altered without
direct teacher permission. Each school may establish additional guidelines
that will be posted in classrooms. Any vandalism, (destroying or changing
files, illegal copying, etc.), intentional copyright violations, or attempted
access to unauthorized data will result in disciplinary actions, which may
include suspension or expulsion.
LIBRARY AND TEXT BOOKS:
First grade students may check out 1 book per check out. Grades 2-5 may
check out 2 books per visit to the library. Lakeview’s library is open daily
during recess. If a student finishes a book prior to their regularly
scheduled visit, the student may visit the library during recess and check
out a new book. Families are responsible for the care and return of borrowed
books. Books should be returned in a timely fashion. Lost or damaged books
(including textbooks) will be replaced or paid for by the student’s family.
CLASSROOM INTERRUPTIONS:
One of the most positive influences in student achievement, which is
documented and supported by solid educational research, is what is termed
as “Time on Task” in the classroom. Unnecessary interruptions detract from
this “time on task” and ultimately have a negative impact on student
achievement. We want to minimize these interruptions as much as possible and
maximize our opportunities for increasing each student’s personal scholastic
achievement.
Therefore, please do not call our office and ask for messages to be relayed
to your child in the classroom. The office staff has been instructed not to
relay routine messages to students and staff. You may call the classroom and
leave a voice message.
FIELD TRIPS:
Parents and guardians are welcome to assist classroom teachers on school
scheduled field trips. Prior arrangements must be made with the classroom
