CELEBRATING DR. SEUSS' BIRTHDAY!

BALANCING & WEIGHING - SCIENCE

During our recent Science unit on Balancing and Weighing, the C-2 students got to make and then balance objects on a beam balance, create their own mobile that balanced, assemble an equal-arm balance and then use it to weigh and balance objects. We hung the mobiles from our classroom ceiling for everyone to enjoy.

ZOO FIELD TRIP

All of the second graders in C Pod visited the Woodland Park Zoo on March 18, 2009, as a part of our Science curriculum. We participated in the "Forest Explorers" program. We prepared for our Zoo visit by first learning about the differences and similarities of the temperate rainforest in Washington State, and the tropical rainforest in Costa Rica.

When we arrived at the Zoo, the Zoo staff put on an assembly for us that compared and contrasted the tropical and temperate rainforests, using the students as the different layers of the rainforests (top photo below). We were then taken on a guided tour of the tropical and temperate rainforest exhibits at the Zoo. The tropical rainforest exhibit is indoors, and it was about 80+ degrees inside!

MAPLE WALK-A-THON

The Maple Walk-A-Thon was held on March 20 in the Maple gym. The students walked laps around the gym during a 30 minute time period. Money raised from the Walk-A-Thon is used to support sending the fourth and fifth graders to camp next fall.
