Non-Fiction Reading Summary and Response Guidelines

Read the assigned non-fiction selection and write a response. Begin each response with the title of the article, your name and the date in the upper right hand corner.

Before you read the article, think (do not write) about:

•What can you infer about the article based on the title and pictures?
•What do you know about the topic before you read the article?
•What do you want to learn?

After you read the article, write a short summary telling what the article is about, using the following guidelines:

Summary Starter for Informational Text

1st Sentence:

This (article, selection, passage, chapter)

(explains, describes) how… (main idea).

2nd, 3rd, 4th Sentences:

Three or more important details from the text that support the main idea.

Example:

This selection explains how Emperor Penguins are built for cold weather. First, Emperor Penguins have an insulating layer of fat. Second, they have tightly packed feathers that keep out the cold. Last, penguins have a layer of soft, feathery down under their outer feathers that acts as insulation.

After you have written  your short summary, include the following analysis:

•What is the most important or interesting thing that you have learned in the
               article?
              •What information surprised you?
•How do you think that you can use the information in this article in your own
life? In other words, how does this information relate to you, how does it enrich your life?

Please see homework page and/or the Calendar in Google Docs for due dates.
