Week 1-3 through 1-6:
I was so proud of the hard work and presentations displayed at the Holiday Open House before break. All of the students did an amazing job. Hope you were able to make it to the event.
Getting back into the swing of things! I hope everyone had a happy and restful two weeks off. I enjoyed the holidays with family and friends and am ready to get back to work!
Students will need the extra structure and support similar to the beginning of the school year during these next two weeks. After having this much time away from our routine they will need reminders and helpful cues to get back into the good habits.

1. USE YOUR PLANNER EVERY DAY!

2. Take time each night to do your independent reading and book log. Do not wait to do it on Sunday!

3. Do your homework every night. Use the teacher web sites to stay ahead of the game and plan for busy nights!

4. Clean out back packs and check all of your supplies. This time of year supplies are usually running low. Make sure you have a pencil pouch with: pencils, erasers, pens, red pens, colored pencils, and glue sticks.

Thanks and have a great week!
Mrs. Ireland

Week 12-12 through 12-16:
1. Math Geo Unit Project - Students must have: 1 box of graham crackers, 2 cans white frosting.
Students were also given a slip of paper on Friday of a list of 2-3 types of candy.
Each student in our class will be responsible for purchasing 2-3 bags of candy to share with the class for our construction. We have found that this saves money and having too much candy! Crackers, Frosting and Candy are due in class on MONDAY DECEMBER 12TH!!!!!
2. Geo unit workbook: Students also have a workbook with classwork to complete by Friday. If students do not finish pages in class they need to finish them at home. All the pages have been dated for the days they will be completed in school. Work for at least 30 minutes a night in this workbook to stay up to date!
3. Holiday Project: Students will be assembling the 3 way boards starting on Monday. Any additional decorations, color pictures and props should be brought into school. Completed boards are due by the end of class on Wednesday.
4.    Holiday Open House!  J Reminder Friday!!J

Students might be drafting,  typing, and editing some of their work at home so please remember to have memory sticks in school EVERY DAY!! Another easy way to work on documents that are saved on the school server is to access your student folder from home. See the instruction below!

2. Click on Student Folder Access

3. Type in your User Name and Password that you use here at school

Math Geo unit will be the focus for the next two weeks. This is another project that will be completed in school. Students do have a workbook that you may see for homework if they have not finished assignments in class. All supplies for construction need to be in by Monday the 12 at the LATEST. By this Friday would be preferred.
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

Week 11-28 through 12-2:
Grades close this week! My grades should be updated by the end of today! I fell behind entering grades with the computer issues over the last few weeks! If your student has missing work they have had a list each week for the last 3 weeks. Most students are caught up. Please check student planners as I can only take late work through Thursday so I have time to correct and enter it.

Holiday Project - Lots of research, drafting and gathering of materials. Students are working with a partner or partners on this project. All documents can be found on the Writing Templates page. Students each have a research folder with all of the documents and materials. This folder MUST be in class EVERY DAY!!!! We will be using our memory sticks DAILY!!! A majority of this project is done in school.  Please ask to see the work they are doing in their green folders. Each group must purchase ONE Tri fold 3 way display board. The dimensions are: 36 inches high by 46 inches wide. PLEASE do not get the smaller size!!!! Any boards that are smaller will frustrate the students because it isn’t enough room for the information and pictures to be displayed. One poster board per group so talk to your partner! The poster boards should arrive to my classroom no later than Monday, December 5th.  The Open House displaying these projects is on December 16, from 7:30 am to 8:15 am. Mark your calendars and come join us for this celebration of the students' hard work!

Geometry Gingerbread House Projects - Math classes are completing a geometry unit. The culminating event is the construction of geometry graham cracker gingerbread houses which will be on display during the holiday Open House. Students will be completing work in math folders and working on geometry definitions. Look for a project description and supply list next week. Each student will need to bring in 2 cans of white frosting, one box of graham crackers and other candy and decorations that they need to decorate the constructed geo houses. They will be working with a partner so the expense should be under 10 dollars total.
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

Week 11-8 through 11-12:
Hope everyone enjoyed the extra hour of sleep this weekend when we "fell back" with Day Light Savings Time. I am still working on changing all of the clocks at home and school!!!

I will be out of town starting this Thursday 11-10 through Tuesday 11-15 of next week. I am from the east coast and will be attending a family wedding. Since it is a long and expensive trip I am taking a little bit more time to visit with family and friends. I am looking forward to seeing lots of people I have missed in the 4 and a 1/2 years since I moved west. I am especially looking forward to sparking my daughter's memories of where she spent the first 4 years of her life! I will be checking email - I have school email on my blackberry - and will return emails during this time. If there are any larger issues that come up please contact individual class teachers, Aurora Baxter - school psychologist,  or our amazing administrators - Mr. Smith and Mr. Williams.

Attention 6th graders!!! Be involved!!!  Here at Skyridge, ASB is our student government. ASB is involved in a variety of school functions such as dances, assemblies, lunch time activities, school improvement events and helping our school’s green efforts, just to name a few!  ASB students are also expected to maintain excellent grades and be outstanding role models.  ASB will add four 6th graders at the beginning of next trimester.  Sign up AND get your application NOW --- available in the Student Center, LMC, and Miss Hofmann’s Technology Room 201. Applications are due by the end of the week, no exceptions!

Veteran's Day is this Friday. In honor of those who have served we have a school holiday. Instead of celebrating a day off from school and sleeping in, I have encouraged my students to find someone in their family or neighborhood who is a veteran and think of something nice they can do for them on Friday. Examples: rake their yard, sweep sidewalks, make cookies and deliver them, ask if they need help with anything or just spend some time listening to them. I also told them that there are events in the area that they may attend to honor vets. Let's make this about honoring those who have served and made our country a free and safe place to live and go to school!
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me!
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

Week 10-31 through 11-4:
1. Please check your planner nightly to complete homework. If you are unsure check the individual class pages or the week in review document on this web site. Homework information is also posted in two places in the classroom so students have plenty of access to the information. BE RESPONSIBLE!!!!
2. The Camas Librarian is visiting Language Arts classes on Friday 11-4 to talk about all of the great services and clubs the Public Library has to offer. Always a great visit!
3. Coat, Jackets and shoe drive. Bring in clean new or used coats, jackets and shoes to donate.
4. Jars of peanut butter - Every year we collect jars of peanut butter to send to the orphans who live in the garbage dumps of Mexico. Please bring in a jar to donate!

October 10 -13

Short week this week but lots of work and projects! Be sure to check planners and teacher web sites!
No School Friday for State In-service Day K-12: A state mandated day off for students so that teachers may attend training, classes and events.
Students who see me at the end of the day for intervention and /or flex class print out missing work and grade reports every Tuesday from Skyward. This report includes info from ALL of their classes. They are to highlight missing work, gather or complete the missing work, staple it to the report, and get a parent signature. They are due to Mrs. Ireland the following day. Ask your student for the report and go on line and check Skyward with them at least once a week! Most students have not had any missing work and therefore have not needed signatures. I am very impressed! Good Job!
The first grading period ends on OCTOBER 21st!!!!
Thanks!!!
 Mrs. Ireland

October 3- 7:

The weather is now cooperating and it really feels like fall! Hope everyone had a great weekend. It is the time of year to head out to the apple orchards and muddy pumpkin patches for some family fun.

Magazine Fundraising has started. This is our only fundraiser at the middle school so your help is appreciated. If each student each sells only 2 magazines we will be able to completely fund the student activity account. This money supports all of our great student activities such as academic clubs and teams, drama productions, sports, student social events such as dances and assemblies. Order turn in day this week is Thursday and the final day is October 13. Thanks for your help!

Weekly Reading/Book Log Homework:

Students in my Reading/Writing class are required to read for 20 minutes every night. They should be reading a book at their independent reading level. I can help if you are having difficulty finding a book. We go to the Library every Monday and students have the opportunity to check out and renew books. The nightly reading is practice and should be done INDEPENDENTLY.  Ask to see the student's "book log" paper for info on nightly reading requirements and book projects and check out the Reading and Writing documents page of this web site for specific instructions.

Independent reading level is a relatively easy text for the reader to fluently read, with no more than1 in every 20 words that are difficult for the reader.  Each student who sees me is working at different independent reading levels.  They will be reading a below grade level book that matches where they are currently assessed.  By reading a book at the reading level that they can read it independently they will be working mainly on comprehension and summary writing skills rather than phonetic decoding.  This allows the student to focus on comprehension of the material and less on the decoding skills required to read a more difficult text. When reading a book at grade level the student would be working on decoding and comprehension becomes more difficult.  We will be reading the 6th grade required novels in class as read alouds and on tape. This will allow students to understand and work on 6th grade curriculum that may be above their independent reading level with support.

Readers have four reading levels.

They are as follows:

Instructional Level

This is the level that the student's reading instruction in based on for guided reading.  A child reading at their instructional level needs adult guidance to be successful.

Independent Level

This is the student's just right reading level.  It is always lower than their instructional level and he/she can read this material without adult assistance.

Frustration Level

At this level the material is too difficult to read even with adult assistance. Encourage the child to save this book for a late date and choosing books at this level.

Listening Comprehension Level

This is the level of text the child can listen to and understand when it is being read to them.  Children are often able to listen to and understand books at a higher level than they are reading independently.  This is a great way to build vocabulary and background knowledge.

If you have any further questions about book logs and reading levels please contact me.
Thanks and have a great week!
Mrs. Ireland

September 26-30:
Last week of the month! Students should really feel like they are getting the routine down and feeling comfortable with their classes, teachers, lockers, homework expectations and class work. If your child is not yet feeling comfortable I recommend they start attending my extra help session after school on Wednesdays. We can work on class work and homework as well as discuss issues and problem solve together.  At the beginning of the year parents are also welcome to attend after school on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:30pm.

Magazine Assembly on Friday at 1:30. This is one of our big fundraisers for the ASB student activities and sports. It benefits all kids so look for the envelope to come home on Friday and SELL, Sell, Sell! J

Students have now completed two book logs if they are in my Reading and Writing class. Most students are doing very well with this assignment. Check for graded papers on Tuesday to see where your child is performing and my comments about the areas to improve.

I am so very impressed with the students in my classes this year. They are hard working and dedicated students who take school seriously. I am so happy and grateful to get to work with them this year. Thanks for sending me such great kids and supporting everything we do here at school at home!

If you have any questions or concerns please email or send a note in with your child. The phones are being worked on this week and I am told they are not reliable until the work is completed next week.

Thanks,

Mrs. Ireland

September 19-23:
Routines have been established and practiced so our expectations and pace are picking up. Tardy marks will now be given and after 2 tardies students will be assigned lunch detention.
Please check your student's planner and accordion folder for handouts and assignments. They have homework each night! Homework is work for our students to practice or review material that has been taught and practiced in school. Sixth graders are responsible for doing their own work and handing it in on time. Parents are responsible for providing the time and place and assistance with directions or clarification. All of the work is the student's responsibility. Students who do not hand in work to Mrs. Ireland receive lunch detention and lose points on each assignment. If your student is in my Reading and Writing classes they have nightly reading and a book log to complete and hand in EVERY MONDAY!!!!!! Copies are available in my room and under the reading documents page on this site.
Thanks for your support!

Have a great week,

Mrs. Ireland

September 12-16:

We have made it through our second week!  Routines and procedures always seem to take up so much of our time! Once established they make the rest of the year much smoother – so it is worth taking the time now! I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the students! I am really looking forward to a great year of learning.

I wanted to take a moment to explain a few details about Skyward. There will be many assignments in Skyward that appear as missing. I promise to be more timely in the future but these first two weeks have required that most of my time is spent with the students and not entering grades!

I often enter assignments into Skyward long before they are due. If you see an assignment listed with a star or zero points possible that means we have not yet corrected it or I have not entered the grade into the computer.  The computer shows assignments as missing as soon as it reaches the due date.  If your child is really missing that assignment it will list a points possible score and their score will be a zero with a check under missing column.  I will also write a reason why the assignment is missing in the comments section based on what your child tells me has happened.

I hope this clears up the many Skyward questions we always have at the beginning of the year!   I know it can be confusing the first few weeks. Please always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Mrs. Ireland

September 6- 9:
We had a great first week of school!
Ask your child about the Sky Code, the "buddy" room, SNN, recycling, using their locker, and meeting all the new students on their team.
Thanks so much to everyone who sent in supplies this week! The first week of school is all about establishing our routine and setting up our notebooks and locker. Having all of the materials here to do that makes the week go smoothly for your child. If you have not sent in supplies please make sure to send them in on Monday so that your student can get caught up! Especially important is the ACCORDION FOLDER!
If there is a financial difficulty interfering with purchasing the supplies please let me know- email, phone or note with your child. In this difficult economic time we understand and we will take care of discreetly providing supplies for your child.

6th Grade Parent Night is Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 6:30-8:00.
Skyridge parents and/or guardians are invited to come and meet with your student’s teachers, receive pertinent details regarding curriculum, major projects and team concepts. Parent night is a wonderful time for you to ask questions and understand the mechanics of your child’s day.  I have set aside a half-hour for you before (please come to room 220 at 6PM) the majority of 6th graders show up.  This means a great parking space and time for you to get to know how my special services team and I will assist your child.

**Parents who would like to volunteer to come on any of our field trips this school year need to have a current Volunteer Application on file with the school district.  You can print this form from the CSD website.  Please be sure to attach a copy of your Driver's License and fill out the back of the form.  Thank you for helping out!!

Wednesday 9-7-11:
Lots of Parent and Student questions about the schedule.
The white print out schedule really should be called a class list since it is not the order of classes nor does it have class times posted. The class list is really the computer program, Skyward's format for teachers to enter grades. Today, all students who see me for any class wrote their schedule in the back of their planner.
The 6th graders have a very smooth and easy schedule to follow once you look at the classes and not the class list. Please see the Schedule page on this web site for further details.
1 SKY Day                  2 Hawk Day
STAR classes         per 1 class                  per 2 class
All students have Health/Fitness as either their Sky or Hawk day. The other day is either: Band, Choir or the Rotation classes - Performance, Art or Technology.
This period is the only thing that changes each day. The rest of the schedule is 3 academic "Core" classes - Math, Language Arts and a Science/Social Studies Block. The end of the day is a Flex/Community period where all students spend time with their teacher team and smaller community in the 6th grade.
The teaching teams are:
Washburn/Smith/Mattson
Givens/Mantz/Laurine/Morrisey
Parks/Kinkead/Westfall
I hope that answers all of the questions!
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email or call!
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

FIRST DAY JITTERS

The first day of school went by in a flash! All of the students did very well today. Some students had the usual locker issues and the lost trying to finding the right classroom but, all in all a good day.  If you (student) or your child (parents) had a difficult time today or has a question or issue that I do not know about please have your student come up to my classroom RM. 220 at the beginning of school tomorrow and I will help them work it out. Middle school is all about becoming more responsible and independent. Please allow your child the experience of approaching me themselves to solve issues. Parents feel free to email me to give me a "heads up" but allow them to learn (with my support) how to problem solve.

No homework tonight! But I will be handing out some assignments tomorrow!

Please make sure to send in all supplies, (especially a locker shelf and accordion folder) purchase a planner and fitness clothes and be prepared for each class.

Thanks for your support and see you tomorrow!

Mrs. Ireland

Fees: Fitness Clothing $17 (required); Student Handbook $6 (required); Activity Fee per sport/extra curricular participation $30; ASB $25 (required if participating in a sport or extra curricular activity); Yearbook $25

Please check out the supply list and come prepared for the first day of school on September 6th. You are welcome to bring your supplies to the Open House Night! The first week of school is all about establishing our routine and setting up our notebooks and locker. Having all of the materials here to do that makes the week go smoothly for your child.  If there is a financial difficulty interfering with purchasing the supplies please let me know- email, phone or note with your child. In this difficult economic time we understand and we will take care of discreetly providing supplies for your child.

Beginning the school year tips for success:

Students need extra structure and support at the beginning of the school year. After having this much time away from a school routine they will need reminders and helpful cues to get back into the good habits of successful students.

1. Get a good night of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast every morning. This is essential for our mind and body to work and learn. If you are not able to eat before you leave for school please take advantage of the school breakfast program or pack a breakfast and come up to my classroom to eat before class. I do not want ANY of my students going to class with an empty stomach. If there are concerns please let me know and we can work out a morning schedule together to make sure this happens!

2. USE YOUR PLANNER EVERY DAY! Write down all of your assignments for each class and check this list off when completing your work each night. A well used planner is the key to Middle School success!

3. Do your homework every night. This includes your independent reading and book log for Mrs. Ireland's class. Do not wait to do it all on Sunday! Set up a routine and a specific place and time to do your work each night. Make sure your homework place is well lit, has all of your supplies and is away from all distractions like T.V., your phone and email! Use the teacher web sites to stay ahead of the game and plan for busy nights!

Sixth grade students should EXPECT to have at least an hour of homework every night! Parents please remember to have your student check planners, teacher web sites and provide homework time each night. They have homework even when they say they don't!

4. Clean out back packs and check all of your supplies at least once a week. Make sure you have a pencil pouch with: pencils, erasers, pens, red pens, colored pencils, and glue sticks. Don't forget that memory stick EACH day!

5.  Use an Accordion Folder. Get a sturdy plastic version with a strong closure. We will set these up in school and they will be an important tool to help you keep track of your assignments and completed work. REMEMBER - File it! Don't pile it!!!

6. After-school Help on Wednesday's from 2:45-3:30PM starting on September 14th. If homework is not completed daily or a student is not passing a class they will be asked to stay with me every Wednesday until they are up to date and passing. They need to have a ride home at 3:30PM.

7. Add to your favorites and bookmark this site:   http://www.camas.wednet.edu/sky/index.html

Please check my web site and student grades on Skyward at least weekly.  You can easily access all of the needed teacher sites and skyward as well as follow the school calendar through the above site.

I know it can be confusing the first few weeks of Middle School. Please always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
See you Wednesday!!!
