Reading and Writing Homework:
Students will have homework 2-3 nights per week in addition to nightly
reading. This homework consists of spelling work or drafting and editing
written work.
Spelling homework: Yellow spelling page or pages will be assigned once a
week. It will always be due in 2 days. We use the Sitton spelling program.
Writing homework: Editing and improving our written work through multiple
drafts will be a major focus of all of our writing assignments. Therefore
students will use their memory stick to continue to write and edit
assignments at home and school. It is very important that they carry this
back and forth daily.
Independent Reading: In addition to homework linked to what we are currently
studying in class, students are required to read for 20 minutes every night.
They should be reading a book at their reading level. I can help if you are
having difficulty finding a book. We go to the Library every week and
students have time to check out and renew books. This reading is practice and
should be done INDEPENDENTLY. Students log their reading on the reading log
sheet. They must record date, time, pages read as well as write a one or two
sentence response. Check out the Reading and Writing documents page of my web
site for instructions and copies of the required forms. When students finish
reading a book they then complete an END OF BOOK RESPONSE. This is a two to
three paragraph response to a book that has been read for the weekly book
log. Students are required to use the computer to type this assignment. See
the rubric for work expectations. One book response due 1st trimester, two
due 2nd trimester, and two due 3rd trimester.
Assignments:
We are studing a unit of reading and writing study based on the novel
Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. We will do most of the reading in
class. See the Writing Templates page throughout this unit for copies of
writing assignments.
