Daily Class Procedures

1.  (5-10 minutes) Each period will begin with a warm-up. The warm-up will be posted on the overhead projector or written on the board, begin as soon as you enter the room.

2.  (5-10 minutes) We will grade your assignment from 2 days before, and review the previous day’s assignment.

3.  (1-2 minutes) Cool number of the day.

4.  (20-35 minutes)The bulk of the class period will be dedicated to note taking, or a learning activity. You will be required to take notes for this class. In-class activities will be graded as a part of your notes. More information on your math notebook to come.

5.  (1-10 minutes) When notes, or in-class activity are over, I will assign your daily assignment. With the time that remains, if there is any, you will start on the assignment. The last minute of class we will clean up any garbage that has been created, and straighten the tables for the next class. After the bell rings I will excuse you.

Tardies and Absences

·   You may not earn points for assignments missed from unexcused absences.

·   I will allow and encourage you to make up work from excused absences. If it is a foreseeable absence (sporting event, dentist appointment…) see me before so that you don’t get behind.

·   If you are tardy you will not earn credit for your homework. You will receive a detention for every tardy after the first (resets each quarter).

Math Notebook

A significant portion of your grade will consist of your math notebook. Your math notebook will contain four sections: warm-ups, notes/activities, assignments and tests. For each quarter you will receive a single notebook grade, which will be assigned at the end of that quarter. I may randomly collect your notebooks to provide you with feedback.

Your math notebook is an organizational tool for you to keep your all of your math papers together so they are easy to access and refer to. You may choose any organizational scheme that works for you and is recognizable to others. It will provide you an additional resource to help you with your homework, studying for tests, and you will even be able to use it during the final.

Rules/Policies

I expect that all students will follow school rules and dress codes as stated in your student handbook. Cheating will not be tolerated. If you cheat you will get a 0 for that grade and recurring offences will result in harsher discipline.

My most important rule is: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. If you break my rule on any given day: for the first offence you will be given a warning; for the second offence (in the same period) you will be required to meet with me on your own time (before and after school or lunch) to discuss your behavior, also a log of the behavior will be created; for the third offence you will spend 10 minutes of your time cleaning the classroom; a fourth offence (which better not happen!!!) will result in additional cleaning, formal detention, and/or removal from the classroom. Behavior that is extremely disrespectful may result in immediate detention or removal from the classroom.

PARENTS READ ME-

I-pod/cell phone policy: I see it, I take it. It will be placed in a red envelope and send to the main office to be picked up after school. Recurring offences will increase the consequences. Parents I know that cell phones are an important tool for communicating with your children but please understand the extreme distraction they cause in a classroom. In an emergency, do not call your student’s cell phone because I will not let them answer it, instead call the school at the main number 222-7200 and the office will notify your child.

Tips for Success

Attendance is essential for success in this class. Taking notes and participating in learning activities will help you understand the daily assignments. If you understand the assignments you will do well on the tests.

If you get sick (it happens) you should borrow friend’s notes so that you still have a record of what was covered in class or you can take notes from your text book. For school related absences you should make arrangements with me ahead of time to get the material you will miss.

If participating in class and doing the homework isn’t enough, I will always be available at least ½ hour before and ½ hour after school for you to come in and get one-on-one help. You can also make an appointment with me to meet at lunch. The math department also runs a tutor center for an hour after school Mondays-Thursdays in room E-216.
