Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that it is November already. Your children have been working hard, and we are
having so much fun. It has been great having so many of our parents, who have the time, volunteer in
our classroom. You have been a huge help and we appreciate it greatly.
In reading, we continue to focus on making Text-to-Self connections. We have also been working on
building our fluency by rereading texts. Your child has amassed a large collection of poems that they
keep in their poetry binders. Each Friday, we practice reading the poems for the month so that we can
get used to rereading texts. We just practiced our November poems for the first time today!
In writing, we continue to focus on writing small moments. We have been “zooming” in on those
everyday moments that we do not think are exciting. Then we turn them into stories, and realize how
great they really are. This week we met our new writing partners. This is the person that your child will
be working with for quite some time. We are learning about how writers work with others to improve
their own writing.
In math, we just finished unit 2, and took our second math assessment. Look for those to come home
sometime next week. Thanks for making Deck a Day such a huge success in 1st grade. Your students
are making tremendous gains in their math fact automaticity.
Finally, thank you to all those families that have sent in their mustard and relish for Martha’s Workers. If
you have not, please try to do it by next Tuesday. Thank you and have a lovely, and hopefully, dry
weekend.
Mrs. Gilbertson
