Spelling Program

5th Grade Spelling Program

Your child will bring home a collection of spelling words weekly that have been introduced in class each Monday.  Each night of the week your child is expected to do a different activity to ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered.  These activities have been modeled and practiced in school, so your child can teach you how to do them.

Monday- Cut & Sort!  - NO WRITTEN HOMEWORK!
Cut out your words and sort them into categories. Read each word as you sort it.
OPTIONAL: Write down your categories – copying each word!

Tuesday- Category Sort & Plus Write Two New Words! - HOMEWORK DUE WED!
Write down your words under the columns they belong – you may copy the words if needed.
Brainstorm and add at least two words to each category.  Look in the book you’re reading or a dictionary if you’re stuck thinking of a word!
(Should not be typed as you’re practicing the correct spelling of your words…)

Wednesday – sentences, paragraph, definitions - HOMEWORK DUE THURS!
Write:
10 or more sentences using ALL your spelling words
OR
a paragraph/story using ALL your spelling words
OR
define EACH spelling word in your own words/using a dictionary
Make sure to head your binder paper!!
(You may type, just make sure to use 12 or 14pt normal font.)

Thursday – Study!
Study for your test tomorrow by asking your parents to do a blind sort with you, or copying the words 5 times each.
Suggestion: Do a Blind Sort: have someone read you the words and write them in their correct category.
Nothing is due to me.

Friday- Test Time!
