Dear 2nd Grade Families,
Last week we began our study of The World Around Us in Social Studies. This unit will focus on
student’s understanding of landforms, regions, and cardinal directions. Students will also learn the
fundamentals of mapping. These are skills that students can utilize in many real life situations, as well
as being covered on the ITBS test.
We have also started Unit 3 in Math. This unit explores place value, money and time. Many of these
skills are review and extensions of previously learned concepts, but students will begin to master them
and apply them in their daily lives. Please hang onto the Unit 3 Family Letter (included in this week’s
homework packet) to help you discuss math concepts with your student at home.
In Science we are moving from the study of air to the study of weather. Students will learn to
observe daily weather conditions such as temperature, rainfall, cloud cover, wind speed and wind
directions. They will be recording all of this information on a class calendar and in their science
journals.
