Environmental print is a term that the parents of every young reader should
know. It is the print we see all around us: the labels on food items such
as their favorite cereal or peanut butter, the logo on a favorite fast food
restaurant and the stop sign at the corner. Environmental print is the
print we recognize from the colors, pictures and shapes that surround it.
Environmental print is usually the first print children recognize. Then
they move on to reading the words, first without the color and then without
the pictures and shapes that surround them. Recognizing environmental print
makes a child feel successful at “reading” and motivates them to read more.
We will be making booklets of Environmental print using the prints that your
child brings to school with them. Please begin to collect familiar print
samples with your child. An excellent source for print samples are food or
store coupons and labels on packaged food. Send as many samples as you can.
Your child will be proud to show their classmates how well they can read.
BOOK IT!
We will be participating in the reading proram "BOOK IT!", sponsored by
Pizza Hut. I am asking that parents read to their child at least 10 minutes
per day. The goal for each month will be 300 minutes. If you reach that
goal, your child will be rewarded with a coupon for a free personal pan
pizza at Pizza Hut.
This program runs from Oct. to April.
Thank you for helping your reader to grow.
