Environmental Science this year in 6th grade science has been addressed through a guest speaker series.
- Our first speaker on December 13 and 14 was Jennifer Johnson from Thurston County Environmental Health speaking on Toxins in Personal Care Products. Each student got to take home a sample of lip balm made with few ingredients.
- Our next experience was our field trips on February 1 and 3 to the LOTT Wastewater Treatment Plant. We received a scientific lesson on systems, looked at helpful bacteria in microscopes, enjoyed the interactive exhibits in the Wet Center, and took a tour of the plant. Many thanks to all of the parents who volunteered to come on this field trip. We received compliments from the educator on our excellent behavior. Each student received a copy of the WET Science Center News and a 5-minute shower timer. Students also took home a recipe book for toxic-free household cleaners from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
- On February 15th Rich Hoey, Director of Water Resources for the City of Olympia, will speak to all classes about where our water comes from and how to be water wise.
- In the spring we will hear from John Calambokidis, Research Biologist with Cascadia
Research, during our Diversity of Life unit.
Thank you to all of these people and agencies for contributing so much to our year.
