Choosing Terrific Books

The Holy Apostles School Library and Learning Center have a shared goal of
instilling a love of reading in our students and helping them to find
appropriate books they enjoy. To this end, we want to share books with the
children so they will come to know the joy of books. In addition, we teach
reading and library skills, and support the academic curriculum by
reinforcing research skills. In many instances, library and learning center
plans coincide with and collaborate with individual teacher plans. When
appropriate, links to resources supporting these plans are posted on this
portion of the library website.

BOOKS YOU CAN READ BY YOURSELF

Second grade is working on choosing appropriate books they can read by
themselves. We have read “Goldilocks and the Three Libearians” by Jackie
Mims Hopkins and are talking about finding a book that is “Just Right.” One
way to find a book that is “Just Right” for a child is to use the FIST
test.
1.	Open the book to the middle. Select a full page of text
2.	Read the page (aloud if possible)
3.	Put one finger up for every word you can not pronounce or do not know
4.	If you get to five (5) fingers up on one page, the book is too
difficult to read independently
5.	If you do not get any fingers up, but are reading slowly and
decoding almost every word, you may not enjoy the book.

BOOKS YOU WILL ENJOY READING!

Fourth grade is working with Mrs. Klawans and has learned another way to
choose a good book – the FIT test.

F is for finding a book that looks interesting
I is for investigating to see whether the book is too hard or too easy
T is for trying the book or trading it in for another

Stay Fit! Choose good books!

BOOKS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR AGE

Students in middle school sometime have a difficult time finding appropriate
books. Many read at an adult reading level, yet still must find books
suitable for their age in content. Others may have a lower reading level,
yet enjoy reading about children their own age – so they may need to choose
books at a lower reading level, yet higher interest level. Keep in mind
that reading and interest levels are somewhat subjective. Parents should be
aware of the books their children are reading – both in terms of reading
level and content. Many books with content more appropriate for high school
are marketed to middle school students.

We encourage children to choose books from many different genre – fantasy,
historical fiction, realistic fiction, poetry, biography, informational,
mystery, and science fiction, adventure Visit the Monroe County Library’s
website for handy lists by genre and interest.
