Homework

We are working on understanding characters.  When reading with your child, ask them what words and actions help them to understand the characters in the story.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ NON-FICTION AS WELL AS FICTION.  OFTENTIMES, WE CHOOSE FICTION WITH LITTLE CHILDREN, BUT THEY BENEFIT GREATLY FROM READING NON-FICTION. together.

Please remember to practice writing sentences with your children.  Remind them to start and end the sentences correctly.  Also, encourage them to make sentences that have interesting adjectives.

We are targeting the main idea and supporting details as one of our current reading strategies.  When reading with your child, help to pick these out with your child.
Write short, non-fiction paragraphs about different topics, as well as fictional paragraphs.  The children are growing in their ability to compose stories.  We will do a lot of it at school and it helps greatly if they are familiar and comfortable with writing their thoughts.  I emphasize correct spelling, indenting the first word of the paragraph, and beginning and ending sentences correctly.
Please continue to study the spelling words regularly.  Ask your child to take at least one challenge word each week.

We have begun studying multiplication and division.  We are using very simple problems and we allow the children to draw arrays for multiplication and to make pictures for the division problems.
