Homework Policies

Spelling

Spelling tests will be given on Fridays each week unless students are notified otherwise. If a student is absent on a Friday, it is expected that he/she will take the test the following Monday.

Pretests of new spelling words will be given each Friday and the final test will be taken the following Friday. This allows students the option of studying over a weekend rather than following the standard Monday-Friday method.

Students will complete spelling contracts each week. There will be a variety of activities to choose from and students may select the methods that help them learn best. There will be one required assignment each week. Contract activities will be completed through a combination of working in class and at home. Contract options will change from time to time throughout the year.

Homework

Homework is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. At this age, an appropriate goal is for children to spend about 50 minutes per night on homework. As a member of our classroom, your child is expected to work to the best of his or her ability, write neatly, and turn assignments in on time.   Please Note: In my effort to help your child develop personal responsibility, I will only sign the assignment notebooks of students who demonstrate need of this support. I will contact you if this procedure is implemented.

Each week, Monday through Thursday, you can expect your child to have the following homework assignments:

Math:

-Everyday Math Study Link or other math page (Please look for and refer to each Family Letter sent home at the beginning of each unit. Everyday Math has parent resources available at https://www.everydaymathonline.com/

-Any unfinished math journal pages

-Studying of math facts (if needed)

Reading:

- Weekly fluency passages (Read Naturally) will be assigned.  Fluency will be assessed the second week of school. Students will discontinue the assigned reading passages at any time after he or she reaches the end-of-year benchmark for fifth grade fluency.

- Reading homework will vary. Assignments will be recorded in your child’s assignment notebook.

Spelling:

-Work on spelling contract, as needed, and prepare for Friday spelling tests

In addition, your child may receive homework, Monday through Friday, from Mrs. Austin (writing), Mr. Milroy (social studies), and Mrs. Wendricks (science). These additional homework assignments will be noted in your child’s assignment notebook. We value your support in checking your child’s assignment notebook each evening to verify that he or she has completed all assignments.
